Rear subframe mounts

Post by hswift »

Xantia Estate, 1998.
When the car was up on jacks this morning I noticed that there is some up and down movement of the rearmost rear subframe mounts, i.e. the ones immediately above the rear spheres. Looks like maybe the rubber is on its way out. Is movement normal on these mounts and, if not, how easy a job is it to replace them?

Some movement is normal, the question is when does it become excessive, I would suggest that if you can cause it to knock by levering under the tyre, or if there is easey movement from side to side or front to rear, then they may need looking at otherwise its more than likely just normal.
Do you notice any noise related to the rear wheels going over bumps or does the car wander, difficult to keep in a straight line, if not I wouldn't worry.

I think the Xantia has a passive rear wheel steering system like the ZX in which case it relies on some careful geometry and sideways movement in (some of) the rear subframe mounts to work.
I would expect some downwards movement of the mounts when the load was taken off the suspension. If these mounts are of the bonded metal/rubber type there should be NO separation of the rubber and metal nor excessive perishing or oil contammination. Ususllay that is about all that happens.
XJ6 Jaguars used to suffer from rear subframe mount failure and the first I knew about it was when I jacked the car up and the back wheels stayed on the ground!

It was levering the wheels that brought the movement to my attention. One side is definitely more pronounced than the other.
I did 250+ miles yesterday with five people aboard and no evidence of the vehicle wandering about. No obvious unusual noises going over bumps either.
If the mounts are suspect, can they be replaced easily and quickly? Anything more than a couple of hours or more than undoing a few bolts and I'll leave it to my local specialist.

Does anyone have paractical experience of replacing these mounts on a Xantia estate?
