C5 Clutch scare

Post by JohnD »

Earlier in the week I was towing my caravan up through France. On a hill I changed into fourth gear and the car slowed down and the engine revved. The clutch was slipping (wasn't it?). Finally, after getting into second, and leaving a cloud of blue smoke, I managed to get onto the hard shoulder. I switched off and thought through my options. Before getting on the phone, I decided to try driving one more time. Although I was still on the hill, the engine started as normal, I selected first gear and away I went. The next four hundred miles up to Dunkirk went without any further drama.

It scared the life out of me. What went wrong?

Maybe with pulling the caravan uphill the clutch might of overheated and started to slip. While you were sitting working your options out it cooled down

Although it was a steepish hill, it was quite a short one. Nothing like the long slogs that I'd previously done in Spain. But thanks for the suggestion.

No - there wasn't any burnt clutch smell, only the smoke. And No - I haven't been able to log on to Citroen-owners for a week or more. Even Aussiefrogs are wondering whats happened.
