Xantia HDi 90 Clutch Slip.

Post by Alec B »

Hi Everyone I'm hoping this will be a simple (cheap) fix. The clutch started slipping last weekend after about 40 mins of driving. It has been fine ever since (we haven't been pushing the car so much) but I would just really like to know if adjusting the cluch cable will help at all. The travel and biting points haven't changed in our lifetime with the car (7 years). If it needs replacing what is the time frame for this job, our mechanic seems to think it's a bit of a bugger to do. Before I forget she's done 110,000. Thanks in advance Alec.

And thanks Admiral51 for all your help with my Windscreen/Wipermotor debacle. All good now.

i dont think there is any adjustment as it will either be a self adjustting cable or hydraulicly opperatted,

it is quite an involved job to fit a new clutch,

i used to charge 180 labour but have now put it up to 200 for forum members pluss parts,

and i usualy ask my customers to leave the car with me for 2 days, even though it dose not take this long,

HDi 90 are cable operated clutches NOT Hydraulic..

It IS quite possible to do these clutches without removing the Gearbox..

A recent one I did in 7 hrs!! Theres nothing a bugger to do! I think he's trying to get out of dooing the job!

Sounds like you may need to bite the bullet and get the clutch done, certainly with that milage, and its not been done before as far as your aware.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry forgot to say that we may be selling the car within the next 2 months so that was the initial reason for seeing if any adjustments may be required rather than replacing the clutch for no real reason. Mind you I suppose selling a car with a dodgy clutch is going to put punters off anyway so I may as well bite the bullet if their nothing that can be done.

haha woops! ..

I meant ....... remove the gearbox from the car.... SORRY!

Split the two in the engine bay, there is JUST enough space with the 110bhp gearbox, as its bigger, but it is possible. Ive done 2 now, but much prefer a TD or 90bhp clutch job.. smaller box, more space.

Thanks Paul.

For a moment there I thought you had discovered something that non of the rest of us know about ......... :)

I seem to recall that one of the Vauxhall cars - could have been a early version of the Astra? - had a slot in the bellhousing and provision to move the input shaft so that the clutch could be replaced without separating the gearbox from the engine.
Seemed like a giant step forward to me but the idea appears to have been abandoned.

Most of the GM Opel cars had that, Astra 2 and 3, GM carried on for a while with it, I even think through Cavalier production, and vectra, but Im not sure.
I know Astra and Cavalier did have that though, which is yes amazing step.. maybee they Patiend the idea..

Yes the vauxhall astra, cavalier and nova from 1986-early 90s had a removable plate and the facility to withdraw the input shaft so that the clutch could be changed without removing the box. Fiddly but swift job. Obviously the agents must have complained that they could'nt earn any money out of this and the removable cover dissapeared about 1992-3. The vectra never had this and in the larger engine versions is a pig to do.
On to citroens---- the HDI90 is not the easiest, but I would consider 7 hours a b--stard. About 5 hours. At 110k miles it's due a clutch.

Hi Alec

"And thanks Admiral51 for all your help with my Windscreen/Wipermotor debacle. All good now."

No problems sir,my pleasure :D

On to the clutch problem......

My guess is your looking at somewhere between £300-£400 for a change of clutch. You may get 1/3 of that back if you sell it or you struggle along as it is until you sell and take a bit of a hit on the selling price if its noticed

Puts on hard hat and runs for cover...

Hi Colin, just what I need just before selling isn't it!! Wasn't expecting it to be that much but I think I will bite the bullet.

I wish I lived near you Paul £200 suits me just fine.
