I have an X reg HDi Xantia, its done 160k miles
Just spent 150 on new front discs, pads and brake hoses to ensure it passes its MOT which is frankly 150 quid I haven't got.
Since it came back from the garage ive noticed that instead of the usual mildly heavy clutch operation, for 95% of the time when pressing in the clutch pedal I have about 2 inches of zero resistance and the clutch is now operated using the bottom half of the pedal. Sometimes there's what feels like a 'crack', almost like something plastic and flimsy has snapped under my foot if you know what I mean.
Im wondering (hoping) its the clutch cable needing adjustment rather than the clutch going. It doesnt seem to be slipping or popping out of gear or any other usual clutch wearing out symptoms but I am newish to Citroens and Im hoping that its just another one of their idiosyncrasies. The dreaded U shaped clip has been replaced sometime last year and the clutch is probably about 3 years old.
Im hoping you wont say its the clutch going but what do you think going on what I have said?
Also I have noticed my brake pedal is very close to the floor with not a lot of travel at all, compared with other xanitas. I can lift it up to what I consider a normal height but it crashes back down to near the bottom again once I let go. Is there any danger with this and can I adjust the brake pedal position? If so, how?
Bit of a long thread I know but once these are sorted I have a car I with almost no problems!!
Hi guys... need help with Xantia clutch - (but not the clip)

firstly how light/heavy was the clutch pedel before the garage did the brakes,
the clutch bitting point should be no more than about half way up its travle from the floor boards,
what sort of miles has the 3 year old clutch done,
i dont think you will heve any adjustment on an X reg XANT as im sure it will be a self adjustting cable,
maybe its you clutch pedel is to hight not your brake pedel to low,
do the brakes seen to function corectly, light pressure for normal braking,
the brake pedel has a canister on the under side of it with a heavy spring inside, this is supposed to give you a pedel feel like none hydraulic car's brakes,

The pedal was heavy before it was taken into the garage, I was told its a Xantia thing and I got used to it after a few days.
Clutch has probably done about 20-40k I would be surprised if its more than that. The biting point has remained the same its just theres no feel at all before I get to the biting point when I press the clutch in
Im sure the brake pedal should be higher as its the lowest pedal out of all of them and has about 1.5 inches of travel to the floor, but they work fine
Xantia 2's have a hydraulic clutch , so there is no cable.

HDi 110bhp ARE Hydraulic clutches, 90 bhp are cable in the Xantias!
This did change however, as a mate has a 90 bhp 406 Estate and it too has hydraulic clutch...
So we can assume you have a HDi 90 Xantia then, which will be cable operated... anyway, it has to be, hydraulic clutches do not get heavy!!

how silly is that ??!! The Hydraulic clutch was THE thing I was so pleased about when I got the HDI. I have recurring nightmares about replacing those b*****d plastic pedal to cable links on TD's !!!citroenxm wrote:HDi 110bhp ARE Hydraulic clutches, 90 bhp are cable in the Xantias!

Auto adjusting cables were the silly thing.
I much prefer manual adjusting to auto or hydraulic.
It means I can have the bite point where I want it, ie down near the floor and a pedal that isn't trying to shake hands with the dashboard.
