Maybe a battery disconnection for a while would reset all the position information and get the system back up and working.
Thanks a lot Kev, that must have taken your time and effort for a stranger!

I do have a lexia, so will see if I can find the valves involved? Any idea where they might be? I've amused myself turning the radiator fan on and off from the computer and cleared faults. But thats all I'v achieved. I can't even get it to regen my FAP.

I'd think twice about using it to regenerate the FAP. Quite a few startling accounts of that and it guzzles diesel like it was going out of fashion.

On the road regen is to be preferred.

I'm not sure my car has done a full one for a while. Its driven about 9 miles to work, and with traffic its usually less than 60 mph most of the time.
I've never seen the message telling me to drive faster to regenerate so perhaps what I do is enough

Try these:-

(1) EGR (exhaust gas recycling) electrovalve .

Perform a check using a diagnostic tool .
Make the following selections in the diagnostic tool :
Menu : "INJECTION"
Actuator test
EGR electrovalve

Listen for the click from the exhaust gas recycling regulation electrovalve

(2) double butterfly housing .

Perform a check using a diagnostic tool .
Make the following selections in the diagnostic tool :
Menu : "INJECTION"
Actuator test
"EGR" throttle
Exchanger butterfly

Check the clicking that should be heard coming from the double butterfly housing .

Thanks for your help Kev. Its been too wet to play the solenoid activation game today. And I think I will need someone else to press while I listen anyway. But you have been extreemly helpfull so thank you.

OK,
I have tried the tests suggested, they look a bit different in my lexia version.
I can hear them all actuating.
I tried taking it for a drive and recording egr parameters, but the lexia just says "please wait" and I can't see the data.

One thing I have noticed in the normal live parameters is "first EGR Valve programming value incorrect".
Should that be anything?

Thanks
Ben

I think that you should investigate the EGR programming message, your problem appears to be EGR related and this is, at least to me a suspicious message.
You will probably need to go to a Citroen agent for an explanation of this although if "wheeler" is reading this he may well have some ideas about this.

Still having the problem of loss of power, have noticed that when it happens some grey smoke appears behind me. I don't know if thats related or because the engine suddenly works hard when the power comes back?

Hi,

Had somthing similar with 2.0 16v HDI, again with an electromechanical egr.

I have found that just running with the egr plug disconnected has removed the problems. The valves have a spring return so the valve isclosed.

I suspect the issue is with the feedback info from the egr being faulty and this confuses the ecu resulting in incorrect fuel and boost levels being incorrect, rather than the actual egr position.

regards

John

The air intake for the turbo keeps coming off! I've done the jubilee clip tight, so has a family member (and some insulation tape), but the problem is the orange ring type thing has a split in it and I assume this makes the pipe stay on the shiny metal turbo intake.
Does anyone know what it is so I can order a new one. I've taken a picture of it still in place. hopefully this will work.

I've had the orange seal replaced and now the pipe stays on, was charged £18 for the seal, fitting was free. (doesn't take long)

Not made any difference to the hesitation. I've tried looking at the wires and things but can't see anything obviously wrong.

Someone has suggested the vanes on the turbo may be sticking. Is there a way to check this since its so intermittent?
Would a fault show if the vanes were sticking?

The turbo variable vane mechanism on the 1.6 Hdi is actuated by a vacuum diaphragm. You could have a vacuum leak which makes the control faulty. Such a vacuum leak on the 2.2 Hdi can cause overboost with Anti Pollution warnings and limp home (power reduction) mode.

If you have access to a hand held vacuum pump you could do the following test:-

'Connect the tool [1] to the valve (2) (pipe with grey mark) .
Apply a vacuum of approximately 0,8 bar the shaft "a" should move by 12 ± 2 mm .'

The shaft 'a' being the centre shaft of the actuator. [1] is a hand held vac pump, (2) is the actuator.

The following boost pressure checks can be made:-

1. Preparation

URGENT : Adhere to the following checking conditions : engine at operating temperature . vehicle in working order . full load engine .

Connect the diagnostic tool to the vehicle's diagnostic socket : select " measure parameters" .

2. Operating procedure
Start the engine .
Engage the 1st gear ratio, and start the vehicle .
Go through the gears until 3rd gear is selected .
Decelerate to a speed of 1000 rpm .
Check the pressure (1500 rpm) : 0.6 ± 0.05 bar .
Accelerate hard : (change from 4th gear to 3rd gear) .
Check the pressure (between 2500 and 3500 rpm) : 0.9 ± 0.05 bar .
Cheers, Kev
