I have recently replaced my cabin filter cos you could have grown veg in the old one. I am not happy with the airflow through the new one. Is there any way of knowing which way it should be fitted cos I didn't note which way the old one came out

I have found that there is considerable variation in airflow and filtering performance between brands of filter. There was one I bought on ebay last year that the fan struggled to push any air through.
At the other end of the spectrum, the GSF filter let plenty of air through, but could be better described as a fly catcher, as it certainly did not remove pollen!
The ones I have been happiest with are Puravent.
