Servicing C5

Post by kaostheory »

Hi guys as you may have read i bought a 52 plate c5 hdi 110 estate. Now this car has no service history so I have no clue what has been done to it. I am mostly worried about belts snapping. I am not the most mechanically minded so what are my options?

Do i just take it to a main dealer and write a blank cheque and say do what needs doing?

Any recommendations for somewhere near Fareham?

Or is there anyone on here who would like to do the work? Obviously willing to pay for the parts and your time..

Or should i buy a haynes manual and attempt things myself?

Also does anyone local to Fareham have a lexia they could use to enable cruise control for me? I am willing to pay as long as its less than the main dealers prices.

I'm in Warminster in Wiltshire and happy to enable cruise for you for free as i've got lexia, I have too many cars that need work doing at the moment to offer to do your cambelt, but its pretty easy on the HDI and the C5 has loads of access space so it one of the easier cars to work on, if you have a socket set and some spanners, i'd say buy yourself a haynes manual and have a go yourself, its not difficult to do

I paid over 700 for a main dealer to change the belt (included service) so I say don't go there.

Mines is getting a new one as we speak and new water pump and new head gasket.

Been told you should get pump done at same time. They are cheap so worth it.

Can I ask, Can an LX have cruise control activated? If so I never knew that and boy that would make my trips to France much easier is it is so.

How would you set it?
C'est pas possible!

Thanks guys for all the replies and offers!!

I guess its a haynes manual job then cos im not paying £700 to have anything done!!!

North Wales you say... anywhere near llandudno junction im there in a few weeks for my uncles wedding!!

Thanks topdonkey i will more than likely take you up on that offer in the near future, my 250 mile daily round trip would be so much more pleasant with cruise...

I have no problems paying for your time and anyone who would help me out with other things i just hate paying money to big corporations who overcharge for everything just because they can. I would rather give the money to people like you guys on here who actually want to help people and not rip them off!!

Does anyone know if i get the 3 line multifunction display does that need to be programmed with lexia also and are there any better stereos (factory) that i can replace mine with. I want mp3 functionality really and have an aftermarket here but i like the standard look. I saw on citroen owners club that a few people with 02 plates have had usb box and ipod kits fitted but for some reason the board wont send me my activation link so i cant post there but thats a different matter...

The cruise control switch needs to be obtained and fitted into the COM2000 unit (indicator.wiper stalk assembly) and then the ECU needs to be told by a Lexia that the switch is now there.

Does your other C5 have CC so you could steal the switch?

There's also a switch on the clutch pedal (to disengage CC if you dip the clutch) but that may already be there - you'd have to check. I think there's also a second switch on the brake pedal in addition to the normal brake light one as well?

You're right about cruising through France. I've just come back from a week in the south near Orange and CC is absolutely invaluable for the trips up and down the (relatively!) unobstructed Autoroutes.

What mileage is it on?

Cambelts are every 100K miles or 10 years on the 2.0 HDi 110s. I think 80K is recommended under harsh operating conditions (?)

However, ive just seen an 03 reg C5 HDi on ebay for breaking as the cameblt has snapped ... at 72K miles. So its neither reached the 80K miles harsh operating recommendation or 10 years, not even 8 years. So thats got me worried now, mine is just about to turn 70K on an 04 plate and i think ill get it into somewhere for a cambelt kit and water pump change. Best be safe than sorry!

Id avoid the main dealer, if your having problems finding someone to do it then try and find a good citroen indy. I have one i sometimes use and might go there for mine. Though the main one i use does remapping too, would be a shame if that was done too!

Have you sourced a cruise stalk yet? Ive been meaning to get around to that, but there are so many other niggly things im working through with it first. :miserable:

Interesting that it fits Peugeots 206, 307 and 407 as well as the C5. That gives you more scope for finding one at a scrappy!

Rereading the conrad-anderson link the C5 switch they advertise is modified to fit their own system. I'm not sure why as nearly all you need is built-in to the C5.

It may not even useable in a C5 without all their gubbins.
