Xantia paint

Post by lexi »

I might have a go at filling and painting a bumper on V6.......in warm weather :) So we need special filler, plastic primer etc. It`s only the corners that are cracked.

Would it be best to take whole bumper back to base or just flat paint?

What paint is on Mk1 V6? It's the moe common dark green. Is it a celly with 2k lac or a 2k with lac?

What code do I need to get paint mixed?

I got compressor and a Sealey Gold gun with one of the better masks. I know of the dangers with 2K....would only spray outside on a calm day with full overall and head covering.

Get the paint code from under the bonnet, behind the drivers side strut top, then goto halfrauds and get them to mix a few cans - much easyer in my opinion.. You may not be able to obtain the paint personally, I could be wrong though..

Theres nothing wrong with the halfrauds rattle cans, I had my V6 Blue wing sprayed with them, with a good result and very good match too!!

Thanks Paul. Being a tight git I much prefer to buy a half litre or even litre of paint. It works out much cheaper and will do other bits later. My paint supplier does those big cans mind you.

Try sanding some of the clear off in a damaged area, then rub it with acetone on a rag. That'll reveal how solvent-sensitive the basecoat is. Gut feeling is that it'll be a catalysed basecoat.

As to methodology - if the damage is general to the bumper, I'd remove it and dismantle the bar, then clean. Paint the main part on horses, and tack the smaller bits to a (sealed) board with masking tape straps to the rear or hidden areas.

Cracked or scuffed? You wont need to fill it they are scuffed, use a D/A with a 180 grit disc to remove the damage, if there are deep score marks use a normal bodyfiller as long as its well keyed, ive never had filler come off of plastic in all the years i've been doing it.

If cracked, you'll need a cold weld glue to bond it first, which can be ground down and filled as normal.

It will be a matt basecoat and 2k clear lacquer.

You can get a non-iso 2k lacquer which is safer to use but always wear a mask regardless as it still contains some nasty chemicals.

Thanks Gareth.

They are cracked at each corner. Is the glue an epoxy? When you say matt colour, is that non metalic and is it a celly or a 1 or 2 k acrylic.

Edit : Cheers Adam just seen your reply.

It`s going to - 15 tonight .........do you think 2k will set allright in that?

Its polyester basecoat the most common, available in metallic, solid, pearlescent etc. Celly basecoat doesnt come close to coverage and i doubt many would supply it now.

I use waterbased for basecoat.

The glue is like an epoxy, two component, when set it has some flexibility though, crucial for some plastics. On Xantia endcaps they are quite rigid so you could use normal epoxy.
