My 2002 C5 manual is very sluggish below 2000rpm, when the turbo seems to cut in. I reckon my old 2CV has more poke! There really is nothing there regardless of gear. In fact I have stalled this car numerous times when pulling off, a problem I never had with my faithful 1.9D BX estate.
Could there be a duff sensor or somethng sticking?

C5 2.2HDi low torque
Carpe diem
A leak in the vac pipes that go to the solenoids can cause delayed action on the turbo cutting in, and if the swirl flap actuator is broken it can cause low down torque loss too, also the air flow sensor can cause the same problem if it is dirty or faulty
To test the vac system, you need to put a vac gauge on it and check it as you actuate each solenoid in turn (you need lexia to do this), also, swirl flap actuation can be tested with lexia too, and air flow values can be verified with live data on lexia or you can swap it out with a known good one (borrow from a friends car maybe?)

Lots of more modern multivalve TDi have torque band higher up.........especially on performance and family cars. They thrive on more revs. The only ones I know that don`t are 4x4 where peak torque on most of these is around 1800rpm.......I`ve seen one as low as 1600 and was a common rail Iveco engine ..............about 240 lb ft at 1600rpm

Isn't peak torque on the 2.2 from 2000 rpm?
I had the same issue with my 2.2, I just accepted it as the way it was set up.
A friends Passat TDi the lag is far less noticble.
My new 1.6HDi is better than my 2.2 as its torque starts lower down, but tis not as good as the 2.2 for overtaking in the 45-70 mph range.

My Xantia doesn't like being loaded at less than 1500 rpm. It's happiest at between 1750 - 3000 RPM.
Lack of response could be due to the boost control solenoid or electro valve in Citroen speak ! I've disconnected mine and the response is much better. I also reckon I have a faulty boost pressure sensor which is causing it to go into limp home mode intermittently , thats why I bypassed the boost solenoid , to diagnose the limp home problem.
When I get around to replacing the boost pressure sensor , I'll also replace the boost solenoid and everything should be back to normal , I hope

So 273lbft at 1750 isn't bad for a Citroen engine straight from the factory then? (Newer twin turbo 2.2 HDI)lexi wrote:I`ve seen one as low as 1600 and was a common rail Iveco engine ..............about 240 lb ft at 1600rpm
Currently driving a 2004 C5 VTR (old shape) and an Electric Kia Soul. Sorry but the electric one is my favourite!

I`d say that`s fantastic. Just what you want when towing as well. Sounds like a towcar of the year in fact
My 3ltr V6 wont have that...anyone got a figure?

Re: C5 2.2HDi low torque
Swirl valves not working due to vac leak, probably in the actuator itself, this will also affect the turbo operation as well. Although usually with this problem you intermittently get the dreaded anti pollution message and LIMP mode as well.au375 wrote:My 2002 C5 manual is very sluggish below 2000rpm, when the turbo seems to cut in. You can do some basic vac checks without a Lexia. i wrote a lot on this subject last year do a search on swirl valves.

I have noticed this lack of low speed torque with a number of modern diesels, it seems to rather defeat the object of a diesel. The 2.1 IDi engine in the Xantia or XM will pull well from 1400 rpm or even lower under light load and does pretty well the same fuel consumption of the modern engines, with considerably better reliability.
