Myglaren has aready given an idea of the cost but can anyone give and idea of what it has cost them to have this replaced.

Head gasket most expensive item! As its a multi layered laminated gasket! I Paid £45 quid for a 5 notch, from Uni Part!!!
Head skim, around 30 quids, cam belt 25 quids, water pump 30 quids..
Work, a damm sight more, if its anything like the xantia, manifolds need to come off ALL together with the head..
Actually stripping the head down is not that bad, and being a 2.oi the injectors SHOULD come out a damm sight easyer then the 2.2's which NEVER come out..

No Chris,
I think its either leaks or neglegance... Laminated gasket or not, the CORRECT amount of anti freeze is still needed to prevent RUSTING of the block!
She still uses a Cast block and Alloy head.
Ive only heard of a hand full of HDi failures... So I wouldn't worry to much chris, certainly being used to XU series of engines.

FWIW I have never yet had a head skimmed, and have done many head gaskets (which have not later failed).
I make sure that I loosen the head following the correct bolt sequence, carefully clean the mating surface, then use a sheet of glass as a straight edge and some feeler gauges to detect warpage. Never had one that needs a skim yet...
IMHO the head only warps if the engine has been cooked OR the headbolts have been removed the lazy way.

I dont skim either if its simply a Gummed up Gasket from Rust from LACK of anti freeze!
But obviously when an engine has got a bit hot then it does need a skim.

Hi Boristhepie,
I'll speak to some of the independents in Edinburgh and see if they know of anybody in your area.
I'll also ask them for a price for doing the head complete with skim.
Kenny

Skimming the head isn't purely to fix warpage, it's can also be used to fix corrosion. Heads can corrode and cause gasket failure, if its a little bit of corrosion, they can be skimmed. If its a lot of corrosion, you have to build up the corroded areas with weld before skimming them flat again.jonathan_dyane wrote:FWIW I have never yet had a head skimmed, and have done many head gaskets (which have not later failed).
