xantia clutch problem

Post by dantheman »

hi guys,, me again this time i have a clutch problem, i had a new clutch fitted to my 2001 1.9 turbo diesel sx xantia a year ago, and this morning on my way to work, it stopped working, the pedal went to the floor, and no transmission, i can put it in any gear but it wont move the car, the clutch pedal, once you pull it up by hand, makes the engine sound funny if you press it halfway down (if that makes sense) any ideas what s wrong with it before i go and spend a fortune in a garage??thanks dan.

Sounds strange to me, is there anyone living near you who could take a look at it for you?

Where abouts are you?

Sounds more like the clutch thrust bearing to me, still means that the gearbox has to come off though.

I'm with Peter on this 1.

It would be a shame to scrap your car just for a clutch problem.

The gearbox will have to come off to replace the thrust washer tho. I'm sure you could get a gearbox from a scrap yard for a reasonable price. That is if it turns out to be the gearbox anyway.

What clutch did you have fitted? Was it poor quality?

No garage would fit a new gearbox, surely. So a secondhand gearbox, plus clutch and labour = £900 :?

They probably just don't want to do the job. :(

Hi..

Thats a rather ignorant attitude to have amoungst enthusisast here..
Did you not see the 2001 NON Runner Xantia get 300 quid last week on Ebay??

shame to waste such a late car!

My guess is much more likely the clutch then the gearbox's..

A gearbox problem would'nt make the clutch pedal go to the floor! Definitely a clutch problem. Would'nt have thought it's worth scrapping the xantia for a £300 repair.

I know, I don't like Xantia's but it's a shame to see such a "new" car scrapped for the sake of a clutch job. I wouldn't be adverse to doing another one on a car at the right price. :?

A few years ago now but I had to replace the gearbox on my 1.9td xantia with a £50 HDI ebay one. The cost to fit was around £120 cash + the cost of a new clutch. Go and find somone else who can help you with this problem.

If this is the garage who did the clutch before, perhaps they don't want to take resposibility for it. Obviously it depends exactly how long ago it was done, it's amazing how people's memory of time can be short!

IF the garage had fitted a decent clutch like Valeo or even LUK it would have come with a two year warranty. First 12 months parts and labour, 2nd 12 months parts only.

However, there's no way to know what they fitted, they might even have just dropped a plate straight in, this would be my guess.

scrapping my xantia

Post by dantheman »

WOW guys , thanks for all the feed back, i'm now thinking the garage was fobbing me off, after all, they fitted the clutch in dec 2008, and it is guarenteed for two years, they told me they had draind the gearbox, and found fragments of metal in the oil, so it was probably the gearbox had gone, also, i needed new brake pads, i had a hydraulic oil leak, leaking onto my fan belt which also needed changing now, and there were a few other things wrong with the car, IF they were going to spend anymore time on looking for the fault, then it was going to cost me silly money per hour, they suggested the best thing i could do with it was scrap it, so i just said ok yes, sounds like the best thing, i went to pick it up with a trailer, i tried to start it to get the suspension up and the power steering working, and there was nothing there, the engine was all still in bits, in a box on the back seat, i was furious (i still am) they assumed i was going to scrap it so treated it like a piece of s**t, when i told them i was taking it to another garage to get a second opinion they were running round, looking for bits off the car they had taken off, and became very unhelpful, i will now get it thougherly checked, and will be writing a letter of complaint to their head office, they are a "nationwide" company, and i will tell you who they are if i get a wrong reply off them, thanks for all your help
