Central Locking Question

Missus' car again( K reg 1.8i LX)
Central Locking not working- plip does emit light from led so I guess thats ok
However,ever since she got it the part of the roof that holds the receiver has always fallen down and needs pushing back up
how the hell do I find out what the problem is? if I need to reconfigure it how do I do it
at present the only way to lock car is by using key in passenger side -this suprised me -thought it would be driver's side?
so at preset no alarm either

Both front doors should lock and unlock the rest so there is a drivers door lock fault, don't know if the front passenger door will operate the dealocks though.
There is probably a wiring fault in the reciever area if it falls down with the lining, start there.
You need to know if the infrared led is working on the plip, fire it into a digital camera or camcorder with an lcd screen, if it isn't working could be a dry joint or cracked track on the plip pcb.

The IR led on the plip will flash bright white on the LCD upon pressing the button if its working. If you see nothing, point the telly remote at the camera to see what it should look like when its working.
