My other half cleverly span my ZX and walloped a rear wheel against a kerb (luckily he didn't hit anything else).
My friendly mechanic says it needs a new stub axle, but that you can only buy a full axle at £500. is that correct? He said he wouldn't be happy to fit just a stub axle if I found one at a scrappy, it would have to be the whole thing.
Clearly £500 plus labour is too much to spend on the car. It's not a particularly good example. However I want to keep it on the road as my daughter is learning to drive in it.
Any advice guys?

Hi Joss -
there are a couple of issues involved to consider :
1) the stub axle is NFP for ZX any variant - meaning no longer available as genuine part.
A second hand part may be found but will require intensive labour to remove.
2) to replace the stub axle, the brake disc and the wheel bearing must be removed.
The wheel bearing rarely survives this operation, because the innermost race is an interfering fit on the stub axle, meaning a new wheel bearing should be considered.
3) the stub axle itself is a rather sturdy little part, meaning much of the damaging impact energy most likely has been transferred to the suspension arm and mountings.
Only a deeper visual inspection can clarify this.
Thats why your friendly and experienced mechanic would rather exchange the complete rear suspension arm as this may well prove to be the most economic solution in the first place.
Its OK to fit a complete second hand suspension arm.
But I'd imagine its a bit high estimate winding £500 up on that.
Try get a second estimate on the repair.

There is a firm near me in Devon that recons these axles and I believe they will fit them as an alternative to delivery but I think the cost is still about £500.00. If the car is otherwise in good condition I wouldn't scrap it, if you buy a modern car it could cost you that much the first time you take it into a garage.
would that be these guys?

I think more than a refurb is required, and I shudder to think what they would charge for a courier to and from IOM!
