Newbie with a Berlingo problem

Post by mike_stone »

Hello I'm new here and from having a look about seems like an ideal place to share my problem.

My '99 Berlingo will not turn over and has a key symbol lit up on the dash. I've checked and the battery is fully charged and dont know what else to look for, any ideas.. ?

I will be posting more so this isn't a one post wonder and then will disappear !!

If the battery is deffo good the first thing i would be looking at is the gearbox earth strap.

Would that cause the immobiliser light to be on the dash and a beeping noise ?

Not likely.
The signalling you get is a key recognition failure.
And then my best guess is a failing transceiver coil fitted around the lock barrel.

They are prone to have a short service life.
They can be checked with an ohm meter, as obviously the coil should show some sensible ohmic resistance. They disrupt (hi ohmic) on failure.

Thank you for that. Ever the last few weeks it's taking an eternity to get the thing started but once started it would be fine for most of the day. I guess this is a totally seperate issue?

Definitely possible, i've seen this exact fault many times on the berlingo.
The imobiliser does not stop the car cranking.
