I've been playing a little game recently in traffic, where the car is in "D" and I let it creeeeak forward by lessening footbrake pressure. This causes an impressive resonance and sometimes gets other motorists looking around.
What really piques my interest though, is how much noise is transmitted! I'm surmising the strut top mount where it butts up into the body, is a principal cause of this transference.
Been wondering if a thin extra layer were inserted there, of medium durometer polyurethane or rubber, whether it might be appreciably quieter with only a slight increase in "squirm" under hard side loading.
Anyone else pondered this stuff?
Cheers, Adam.

You're on your own Adam!
On my father's VSX 2.0i I get a slight raspy metallic resonance as if it's
through the exhaust. Guess a bit like a flex on the drive plate mount for
the torque convertor. Never worried about it and the autobox is brand
new from Citroen probably 20k mile in use now.
Are you thinking the tip of strut crown is catching the bonnet or just
twist of torque on the rubber mount is making a resonance?
Andrew
ps. Happy New Year Adam, cheers!!

And a Happy New Year to you - isn't it something like "שנה טובה" in Welsh?
I think resonance from the pad creaking over the disc surface, is being transferred up the strut and then through into the engine bay sheetmetal.
Mate has a 406 with the same motor and similar mileage, and front of his car is noticeably quieter on the road. I'm thinking similar lower arms and subframe mounts, but different top mounts as being the likely cause of different noise levels.
