Sticky overload?

Post by xantia_v6 »

I think this forum has too many sticky threads (currently 10).

I think any forum has too many when you have to scroll down to get to the first most recent non-sticky posting.

Can I suggest that most of the current stickies (and most new ones) could be replaced by about 3 locked posts (which could take the form of stickies or announcements) which contain links to the current sticky threads?

I imagine the 3 new stickies being "Forum Posting FAQs", "Xantia FAQs", "Lexia and Parts Relay Locations".

This new arrangement would allow a lot more scope for adding new FAQ type information in a navigable manner.

I will now run around very quickly to provided a moving target.

Mike,

I do agree so you can stand still

I'll discuss with my fellow Admin and see what we can do.

Not yet though, I'm V6 dismantling

I think most forums suffer from too many stickies at the top, its like your desktop gets too many shortcuts and files on it over time, my solution is to open a new folder and put everything in there so i only have 1 on display but everything is in there

so maybe we could create 1 single super sticky that just contains links to other threads that need stickying ?, that way you keep all the important stuff 2 clicks away instead of 1, but the forum doesnt get clogged up

I never find it a problem, as i always view new posts, or view my posts. All stickies older than 6 months should be thrown in a Sticky archive, problem solved.

I agree. It irritates me too, especially on the laptop with a wide, shallow screen and the rubbish scroll on the mousepad.

Had vague ideas about tackling it for a while and even made it worse by adding another yesterday.

Looking into it:)

That is certainly one solution that occurred to me, offset by the fact that stickies are there to be found easily and in the context of the forum they appear in.
Each one may need to be addressed individually. I'm sure some can be moved and some merged.

I noticed!! lol

I understand what xantia_v6 says, a super sticky is a great idea!

Ok so other forums are the same, but we are better.

We will be when we have the new board software.

For the present though we may be doing little or nothing as the board software has some limitations and any other approach will just end up confusing the issue.

We won't forget though as it has been niggling me for some time now.

I'll avoid the temptation to make this a sticky :)

Yes, this (and many other features) is available in phpBB3.

As Steve says, we're planning it but with some caution.

We have a small phpBB3 board running live on the XantiaV6 forum and this is using a custom "skin" or style called "Frozen Pheonix". I'm not happy with the default styles of phpBB3 and chose a custom one as the best of a bad lot really.

Grateful if you'll all take a look at it and see if you could tolerate that style on the FCF.

I'm still not happy with the performance of phpBB3 or it's spammer resistance just yet.
