Lets just say it was a factory in Wales
Your unit is from that factory
Am i missing something here?

Was there issues with alternators from a certain factory?

And is that you saying my unit was from that factory? :?

Sorry for bumping an old topic but my current hdi has been playing up, slow starting/gauges flickering etc.

I popped the bonnet today to test the new battery i bought recently, the positive wiring to the batt has melted, although not as bad as the pics on page 1 but the insulation has gone & will need replacing, the terminal has melted a little too.

I have checked the alternator and its showing 14.4v. The positive terminal seems to be a little bit loose & wiring isnt hot when running, could the loose terminal have fried the wiring??

Any loose connection will generate heat as it causes a high resistance in the circuit. The starter draws several hundred amps so a drop of two volts could give you half a killowatt of heat! Your alternator voltage is OK but again the charging current can be 50 amps or more when the battery is low which can also generate a lot of heat, a new cable and connectors should work wonders. Do grease the terminals though and any other connections you repair, this will prevent further corrosion.

Thanks for the reply, will renew the lot as it looks pretty bad.

Am i right in thinking some of the wiring goes to a terminal block under the big fuses?

Yes, it does. Ring terminals and 8/10 mm nuts.

Ideal that makes it a little bit easier to renew.

Just had the car running, starts fine now the terminal is flogged up but the wiring is still getting fairly hot although i can touch it without burning myself  Could be a short somehwere?

Heat will travel quite a long way down the wiring but the hot point will always be a connection, unles the cable is damaged.
