Hello again folks,
Just a quickie. I replaced my oil cooler in January 2009 (with a genuine part) but it looks like it has gone again!!!!!!
Is this possible and has anyone else experienced one going so quickly?
The main dealer has said that I can buy a new one at well over £100 and send the "poss faulty" one back for inspection and if found faulty they will refund but obviously if not there will be no refund! It's just a lot of money at this time of year.
Thanks in advance.

Very strange as these are stainless steel !! So if it has failed I would suspect a mechanical problem like a weld etc. In that case , unless damage was caused during installation , it could be a manufacturing defect.

Not necessarly, the oil is under much greater pressure than the water so if the leak is only slight it will favour the high pressure side. I had this problem with a n XM some time ago and a new gasket didn't cure it so there must have been a crack somewhere. I periodicaly removed the oil by pouring water into the filler so that it overflowed and the oil floated out, ran it for thousands of miles like that.

Hi sledge
Oil in the water is a regular problem on XM's with the 2.5TD engine. In that case it is difficult to be sure if it is head problems or the large aluminum oil cooler that has gone. If the oil cooler has failed then it is always oil passing into the coolant water. One way to check on this is to bypass the oil cooler using a short length of 15mm copper pipe to join the inlet and outlet hoses.
If the oil does not reappear after flushing out (not the easiest of jobs as the oil just coats the inside of the system as you drain down) that confirms that the oil cooler is leaking. On the XM unless you tow heavy loads the oil cooler
is not critical (not sure that a 1.9 is similar in that respect though).
