ML5T Gearbox

Post by KP »

Ok as the thread has been lost I will recap a little and bits I have missed please chip in so the info is correct.

The 5th cog on my Activa using this box gives me 50mph maybe the tiniest smidge over at 2000rpm.

2.1td's seem to give nearer 60mph.

What I think i last mentioned was the possibility of gettting a higher ratio'd 5th cogset made up.

Is this possible or would an original set be needed to have a baseline to start from??

really i'd like more like 65 in 5th at 2000rpm as that would mean at 60 or just under when trailing lorries the engine would be just about on the turbo spool up start. this should then reduce boost pressure occuring more, also leave the engine in more NA kind of enviroment and mean that i can save a bit more fuel and enjoy the torque more when at higher speeds as i do feel my engine is much stronger from 2-4k rpm for boost, specially on non Shell Vpower high octane fuels which i have now had to use. Shell doncaster had none last time i pulled in and they said it sometimes happens!!

Thats still a better ratio than what i have at the minute.

I remember when Haynes Manuals would tell you ratio's for gearbox's so may check the BOL and see what it says but i bet it says its the same for all ML5T box's when it clearly isn't...

Will, I think I said previously (before the webserver got the strop) that it might not be too hard to swap the 5th gear pinions over from a 2.1TD ML5T. That'll give you a higher fifth if nothing else...

If I'm right, the fifth gear pinions and synchro all live under the tin cover on the end and can be swapped without disturbing anything else.

I've an ex-Activa ML5T here so when I have a moment, I'll whip off the cover and have a look. If it can be done easily it'll be worth a try.

Geoff Lobowski may have a 2.1TD gearbox available and Amy4320 (or similar) advertised one in the For Sale bit but that post has been lost in the great December Server crash

I may be wrong here but if you keep that xu turbo off boost on the cruise will it not start sucking on fuel like a tank?

Nope not wrong, spot-on Dean!

Keep the engine on boost for best economy as the VE goes up nicely.

The 2.0TCT is its own worst enemy in having so much torque low down, it does not encourage you to keep it spinning...

I guess this mod might be ok for long distance motorway work which is what you must do a lot of then KP? if not the fuel savings will be very poor but deffinatly an interesting experiment!
What do you all get mpg wise from an Activa on an average week then?

Don't go there Dean  It has all us Activa owners reaching for something to dull the pain

Let's just say that a V6 Auto is actually more economical by a good margin in town..

Me, myself, being an old git who drives like one, I get low 20s around town and up to about 36 on a good A road run. On one occasion I saw 39mpg out of Gareth's Activa on a run to Dover (all motorway door to door) and 37mpg out of my present Activa.

The V6 returns about 36 on a run but high 20s around town.

I dont think thats too bad Jim, i have the N/A version in my xm at the moment and i am getting 22mpg on the island, which is basicaly town work, ive had 39mpg out of it on the mainland doing a run up to north wales with 3 people in there and a boot full of stuff, the xm weighs in at 1500kg which will be a bit heavier than a xantia so i will loose a bit there, then i will keep the auto box which will loose me a bit more but if i can get above 20mpg over here i will be a happy bunny.

If it makes you Activa owners any happier. I barely see 15mpg round town from my Alfa. Only went over 30mpg (just!) on the trip to Jim's and back.

Yes, but for the beautiful music the Alfa V6 makes, it's worth it :D

Like a symphony orchestra on wheels is an Alfa V6...

Can someone please explain to me how an engine is on boost at cruise doing 70mph?

Answer- it wont be, not on the flat anyway, it wont be boosting at all and Activa's are fine at cruise IMO, its town/urban work that kills it and its mainly down to the low compression ratio that causes the poor mpg and not the gearing.

I've never found mine to rev too high at the legal limit, the gearing overall is not very sporty, the ratios could be a bit closer but if it aint broke, dont touch it...
