Mystery Loss of LHM

Post by rg »

Folks,
I've just checked my level, and it has gone down from to top of the marker
to somewhere half-way down.in around 1000 miles.
No sign of any LHM on drive. A suspicion about the rear spheres, though.
The ride has become a bit choppy.
Questions:
1/ Would a decaying or ruptured sphere cause the loss? Surely not that
much?
2/ Are there any places where LHM can escape and "hide"? Steering rack
area?
3/ Is the level subject to variation anyway? I have cycled the suspension
(high-low, etc) around fifteen times in recent days.
4/ Oh yes. The "boot" on one strut refuses to stay up. Does it just pop
over the rounded bit of the strut top? Or is it time to use one of the
miracles of modern science, a cable tie?
Cheers

I reckon you've popped a sphere. LHM doesn't hide in the system and if there are no visible leaks, then the sphere is where you'll find it.

Yep, up to 400 or 500 cc depending on the size! The sphere that has gone will be rock hard with no damping at all.

Thanks, folks,
Spheres are originals from '97 and car is an 2.5 Estate with almost 68K. So all this stuff about 100K on spheres is probably not right. Most stuff I read says check every 18 months.
If the centre rear is flat, then will that affect the "Hippoactive" effect on the rest on the vehicle?

It's better to use the number of years since manufacture of a sphere rather than the number of miles it's done. If you hope to recharge, don't let them go longer than three years, otherwise they'll be damaged internally.
