Seats . . . am I right in thinking that opinion on this forum is equally divided between Xantia electric seats and XM seats? Could someone who knows both comment on the differences?

I've been offered a pair of Xantia electrics, but have never sat in any, though that could be arranged. On the other hand, I know I definitely like the seats in Peter's XMs.

Swapping over the runners won't be a problem, as the chap I shall ask to do the work is into custom cars; he was quite happy to fit a Peugeot 504 seat, but we hadn't realised that the electronics would cause problems.

Thanks for confirming my suspicion that the 1.9 diesel hasn't much power below 2000 rpm. It's interesting to watch the revs, and see how Citroen have set up the auto gearbox to stay between 2000 and 2250 most of the time. I find it weird to have a car that maintains almost the same revs around town as it does on a motorway!

The 1.9TD is not blessed with bucketfuls of torque under 2000 rpm when say, compared with a 2.1TD or 110HDi.

In fact, under 2000rpm the 1.9TD is quite flat really.

Sorry jim But i feel I have to disagree on this statement unless your talking about a 1.9TD with an auto box.

my 1998 1.9TD estate has bags of pull under 2000 rpm or maybe its how how I drive her.

Unless you have driven a 2.1 you won't appreciate the difference, we have both, a 1.9 ZX and several 2.1 XMs and I assure you there is no comparison. The 1.9 goes well enough especially in the BX of which we have had several, they are at there best at around 2,500 rpm wheras the 2.1 will pull strongly from 1400 rpm - even up hill. The 2.1 is also capable of better fuel consumption because of the low down torque.

Hmm I have driven an XM diesel 2.1 but I cant say i was overly impressed I hated the seats for a start and being over six feet tall I hated the angle of the windscreen.

mind you it had been a Taxi and done 500,000 miles. so probably had the wind knocked out of it.

I,m talking about one in a proper car - an XM, nothing wrong with the seats in that. :D As you will appreciate the 2.1 is also a very durable engine, the last one I sold had covered 292,000 miles on the original clutch and was still going strong, you could make it slip if you pushed it hard but I got another 20k or so out of it by driving sensibly.

How comfortable a seat is is always going to be a personal thing, for instance chatting to Jim on Saturday about Xantia leather electric seats, he said he prefers the S1 version whereas I prefer the S2.

That's true, most car seats are to short fo me and leave my knees flapping about, the XMs are one of the few that I can relax in. Most of the Peugeot's are nice cars but until the late ones, which I wouldn't consider anyway, are so short as to be uncomfortable.

LD, thankyou for your kind offer; I'd love to try your 504 (and of course you'd be more than welcome to sample my XM) and do have the correct insurance, however alas I live rather a long way away, so such a thing would be rather hard to conspire, unless you may visit some of the Citroen rallies next year?

I have to say I never regarded the GS a difficult car to work on, and indeed found it far easier to repair than a modern car; the principle issues that most mechanics had with it was that it is very different, and needs attacking with an open mind. That said, I must concede that the front exhaust pipes aren't particularly pleasant to do...

The late Argentinian 504s could be specified with air-con, but I don't care for either of the restyles...
