My xm hates me continued...

Post by colinxm »

Hi folks, after being without my xm for a few weeks I finally get it running again only to find an 'orrible clonling noise coming from the front suspension... ha ha methinks, 'tis only a droplink, i've got a new pair of those. Imagine my glee when I find this:

Can you see the split in the bottom part of the clamp ?

Who at Citroen's design department decided to make such a critical component from cast aluminium and then bolt it to a steel subframe and use steel bolts to pass right through it, add to that winter's salted roads and electolysis and what do you get ? yep, a lump of aluminium oxide that crumbles to nothing... Boy am I ticked off !

Anyone got a good pair lying around that they wouldn't mind selling me ? if not I think I'll have a go at making a set from stainless steel and being done with it.

This is what I'm after:

This one came from an xm I broke a while ago, it too is dissolving and falling to pieces...

I'd suggest that all owners check their's asap, Colin.P

It's stunning the stupidity that the mix of metals has come about. I am dreading putting my car into get the brakes refreshed given what previosuly happened to my calipers. They do did this little trick, crumbling to dust. Bad design decsion.

Ps. Your car doesn't hate you, you are just being paranoid. I know. What eh, was that you?

Gosh  And we thought Xantia "P" bushes were bad enough but that defies words Colin!

No, your car doesn't hate you. If they could articulate feelings then my V6 must have had the right royal 'ump with me as that one has thrown up just about every issue a Xantia can

Thanks for the replies and info Gents, I feel much better now even though my car DOES definately hate me.
xmexclusive from the XM Forum has offered the chance of a spare so I should be back on the road soon but I would still like to replicate the clamp in stainless so I don't suppose anyone on here has access to detailed engineering drawings of parts fitted to citroens ? a long shot I know but would save me lots of time trying to get accurate measurements made up from the remains of the clamp.

Cheers Colin.P

Contrary to general belief, Citroens are living breathing things. I've found they often respond to the threat of being broken or crushed quite well

I'm towing my bro in laws XM home this afternoon and I will certainly explain to it very carefully that if it doesn't start and behave, it's for the crusher :!:

My XM's very upset now and will no doubt take the hump... thanks Dave..!! ;)

Actually I think that XM's just have a borderline personality disorder... they need company, attention and nurturing. Also they self harm and have a fear of being abandoned (crushed)

A trait not entirely cured in the Xantia Andy :D :D They thrive on TLC and a bit of pampering
