Citroen Xantia 1.9 TD, year 96, Intermittent Stop light.

Post by vsstephen »

Citroen Xantia 1.9 TD, year 96, Intermittent Stop light.

Recently I send my car to clean LHM fluid container and change rubber over ring. A week after I have changed, some how rather all the LHM fluid leaked from rubber tube near front middle sphere, Foreman claims that the rubber tube need to be changed and I changed and top up the fluid again. From that day and its almost a month I been driving and checked the fluid level indicator, there were no more leaks in LHM fluid. Every day before start the car. I used cheeked the fluid level too.
Now what my problem is rectangle Stop Light and round icon glow together. Usually this sign for insufficient hydraulic fluid, but when I checked, fluid level indicator shows in between two red lines and its safe. What cause this problem. The lights glow intermittently, after start move the car it glows intermittently and goes off. While u ride after change in to 5th gear. It will goes off and some time it will stay. It glows like loose electrical wire contact like that. Also I find some changes in the suspension, some times if all seats occupied (5 person), while u drive and turn left hand ahead slowly, back suspension got heavy vibration. Then I have to stop the car for a while and start again, everything seems to be normal. Please advise and share some if any one had the same experience.

The stop light illuminating can be caused by a low fluid level on coolant as well as LHM. Firstly are you checking the LHM level with the suspension set at high with the engine running? Secondly check the coolant level then get back with your results.

The lights WILL ALSO Double up as LOW SYSTEM PRESSURE as well as LHM Level LOW!

Id say your getting low system pressure - the security valve that switches these lights is lower down under the LHM tank, and has a wire plugged in at one end..

If coolant was low the STOP light and the RED LIGHT on the Temperture guage show together.. not the (!) light... its hydraulic related..

Could be a sign of a weak pump OR more possibly after an LHM change air has NOT been bled from the system correctly..

I've been meaning to ask about this stop light for some time, but figured I would find the definitive answer if I did a search on the forum.

Alas, I cannot find anything that fits my Xantia's symptoms.

The stop light and the warning light that I believe to be the handbrake warning light come on for no apparent reason. Sometimes low speed, sometimes higher. Sort of blinks, sometimes it's constant, then goes off completely.

Any ideas?

Tim,

If it's the red light that normally illuminates when the handbrake is on then the cause is either low LHM level in the reservoir or low hydraulic pressure which is causing the security valve to close and causing the pressure switch to operate.

However, if it is the orange light with a brake a symbol in it then this will be the pad wear warning lamp. Normally, if you know the pads themselves are OK then it's likely one of the wires to the pad wear sesors is chafed and is intermittently earthing.

I'll go out to the car in a minute and check on this.

I think the brake light that comes on at the same time as the big STOP light is the one on the left - I notice that there is another similar one on the right for some reason.

ok, the 'usual' handbrake light is on the right in this photo, but the STOP light and the 'other' brake light are arrowed in the picture.

What you say, Jim?

ok, thanks Jim. The brake light on the right hand side says 'P' if you can't see that.

That's the low LHM level / pressure light - if it comes on occasionally, and tends to flicker when it goes out then the most likely cause is low level.

ok, assuming it is the LHM, how do I go about topping this up? Is it that simple?

Should I treat this as an urgent/safety matter?

It's reasonably urgent - after all Citroen saw fit to fit it with a big red STOP light! Put it on high, engine idling and the plate in the indicator on top of the LHM tank (back RH of engine bay as you look at it) should be between the 2 red lines. If not, just take the cap off (handily marked LHM  ) and pour some in till the float rises to between the lines.

It's no longer reasonable - it's 100% the priority for Saturday.

LHM - obtained from Citroen dealer?
