KNOCKING NOISE COULD IT B GEAR STICK

Hi I have a 94 Citroen Xantia 1.9TD VSX which has had an annoying knocking form the front for some time now. As per usual thought it was the track rod end but after replacing both it's still knocking. I have had the car up on ramps and checked the anti-roll bar drop links which have a very very small amount of play but I noticed that the gear selector mechanism has a lot of play could it be this, has anyone else noticed this.

If ANY slack felt it's surely the droplinks.
