The Xsara VTS is quick, but I doubt it's the fastest in a straight line.
The gearing is slightly longer than in my BX 16V and I believe it would be capable of reaching 140mph - need to find the figures!
I do know it's 167BHP, but it weighs slightly more than the BX so the power advanage is probably negated.
All Xsara's (bar the WRC) are 5 speed, unlike the Pug 306 GTi-6. Although power output is identical for the 2, there are fairly major differences between the 2.
Will try and find some 'accurate' performance figures!

After searching the TopGear website (which doesn't mention the SM [:(]) I got.
Fastest 0-60: BX 16 valve and Saxo VTS and Xsara VTS, all at 8.0 seconds.
Highest top speed: C5 V6 (UK auto version) 144mph, V6 Xantia (UK auto version) 140 mph, Xsara VTS 137mph, BX 16valve 136mph.
Figures for XM 3.0 24 Valve (200bhp) are 136mph and 0-60 in 9.0 seconds.
No figures available for CX though.

its a load of **** that top gear stuf tho, try and get a complete run of Performance car magazines, they did individual performance run for each car tested, all in gear tims and everything. the magazine which was the forerunner to top gear, and journelists who new what they were talking about.
