Fastest Production Citroen?
Anyone know what the fastest car Citroen have mass produced is?
Someone said its the current Xsara VTS - 167BHP, 0-60 in 8 secs, Max Speed 137MPH but I'm not so sure, the figures I've seen quoted for a ZX 2.0 16V are the same from a 155BHP engine. For pure top speed however, the C5 3.0V6 with 210BHP will do 144MPH - I've driven one of these and it didn't half shift, but it only ambles to 60 in 9.7 seconds - my 2.2 diesel isn't much slower than that!

Hi all
My understanding (please anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) is that the fastest mass production Citroen was the Citroen BX 16 Valve Mark 1 (pre cataltic converter, with the old motronic injection)
My dad has one of these, and it's figures are:
0-60 in 7.4 seconds & a top speed of around 140mph. It has a 1.9 16 valve engine, developing 160 Bhp, which I belive has origins in the 205 rally car.
Despite desperate attempts at getting insurance for one (which at the age of 20 had them laughing down the phone at me... as it's a group 16 car [:0]), I've settled for a Turbo diesel ZX untill I finish my course [:)]
On the subject of the Masterati powered SM, I think they did 0-60 in somewhere around 8-9 seconds (but I'm unsure if that figure was for the 3.0 litre or the 2.7 variety)
Cheers
Dave

From Harry Prins & Mikko Salonen's Citroen Sports site
"B X G T i 1 6 V A L V E
(SOUPAPES)
The BX GTi 16 Valves (or Soupapes) is the fastest normal production BX ever made. Its acceleration is impressive in 5-door family saloon class.
The BX GTi 16V Mark 1 was the first French built production car with a 16 Valve engine. It was built from 1988 to 1989 and the Mark 2 version (which in some countries has less power because of the catalytic convertor) was built from 1990 to 1992."
That info is a few years old now but to my knowledge still correct. I don't think the BX 4TC really falls into the "production car" category just as the current Xsara WRC car wouldn't as they are sprcialised competition vehicles & as such couldn't be bought off a showroom floor.
Several cars both BX & subsequent models, went fairly close in performance figures & it is interesting to note that the current highly successful WRC car was based on the BX motor & not the later designs which possibly confirme what Harry & Mikko are saying.
I think performance & speed has to be assessed in several ways; take off to 100 kph, to top speed, between all speeds as well as the ability to sustain a set high speed and I feel as someone who drives one regularly, that the BX 16V does all this.
I have a series 2 but my son bought a series one (possibly the only one in Australia) which he proceeded to flog the ears off a batch of V8s at a sprint meeting when the car was showing 120,000 miles.
We are presently redoing the motor to give it a second go at life [:D]
THEN watch it go..[}:)][:p][8D]

Been a similar discussion on one of the lists which was talking about the BX16V and Andrew Minney tells us that Citroen did a run of about 10 Black BX 16V Gti (which would have to be pre cat models) one of which he feels went to Jersey the rest were in Europe.
That would have to be a likely contender although as only 10 were made, does it constitute a "production car" or is it a "special?"

I may be talking rubbish - nothing new thare I hear you say! but I seem to remember seeing somewhere that some hot CX were produced for the gendarmerie using a 2.8 version of the ordinary 4 cylinder Citroen engine and these were as fast as the SM's they replaced.
My copy of a motor roadtest from 1973 (2.7 litre) gives 0 - 60 MPH of 8.3 sec (substantially slower than a 16 valve) and 0-100 mph as 23.2 sec. The top speed is not quoted due to the fuel crisis at the time but is stated to be similar to a Jensen Interceptor which the same test quotes as 138.5 mph. The engine is quoted as 178 BHP (DIN) and the torque as 171 lb ft at 4000 rpm
On a 16 ft car weighing 29.5 cwt these figures are impressive but so is the cost - £6154 (Daimler Double Six (expensive V12 Jag) £4812! Mercedes 350SL £6995 and BMW 3.0 CSL (special homologation lightweight coupe with thin metal panels and 3003 cc engine about 5 cc larger than standard etc) £7399.
Isnt there a 6 speed Xara with a top speed approaching 140?

Hi Guys
I think that you have missed the fastest ever citroen (not necessarily the best though since the camshaft always went) was the mark 1 XM 24v manual. 0-60 about 7 seconds dead and 145-150mph top speed. 200bhp. The only modern manual V6 citroen? I'll stick to my 12V V6 XM mk2. In kickdown at +60mph in can scare the hell out of hot hatches.
