It's really not surprising that modern engines using modern oils go on for such high mileages. I've seen honing marks still visible on cylinders in engines that have covered in excess of 100K and having no detectable wear anywhere.
Long gone are the days when engines needed a rebore before 50K and any car was very lucky if it even got near the magic 100K.
Good maintenance is still the key to a long-lived engine though...

A village about 40 miles from us use C5 Taxis. While we were over that way we stopped at one of the Taxis and asked the driver what they thought of their car, as i had been considering a C5 HDi at this point.
They were delighted with them, the person we spoke too owned a fleet of 7 C5 HDi Taxis. He reported he rarely has a problem with them and even then its usually a very minor thing. He said they usually go into retirement at aroud 250-300K miles! One had just passed 350 but it was now off the road and providing bits for the others.
Which was enough for me to purchase one and my dad did the same and got a C5 too. The main things he commented on was they go through drop links very quickly and they eat front tyres. Which is true and ive had a pair of drop links already. Though where the Taxis orperate is very hilly, rough and busy, so its to be expected.
HDis seem to run and run, so long as they are looked after, but thats obvious.

I'm watching Paul I have heard of this phenomena before and I am sure its right, the problem is not that the engines wear out, its the unreliability and cost of the bits fixed to them that often causes their demise. The 2.1s are good for at least 300k and many reach it but unfortunately quite a number of HDi,s dont because something to expensive goes wrong with them. I am afraid that the whole concept of a car just stopping because it has develeloped on electronic glitch and I can't repair it is just not acceptable to me.

Pah! Defenatly not andrew, that Xantia still has all her 100k problems to come!
Low milage is not necessarly a good milage, but nice try, 88888 is a good catch too
Im not frightend of high miles what so ever these days, besides, as said else were, the quality of oils prolongs the engines, if worse comes to the worse, theres more then enough in breakers!

Guys in Ozz think nowt of 6 and 700,000 kilometres on the 4.2d Patrol. Apart from engine being tough as boots the long journeys and fewer cold starts must help. A car running 10 hrs a day will rack more miles than any shopping car eh?
As Jim says 70k used to be big mileage. I had two Hillman Minx and both needed rebore at 70k. The Beetle use to achieve 100k plus. German Build and that slow revving engine I think.
You were getting 100kmiles by the time I got to Avengers and Triumph Sixes.......but you started travelling distance on dual carriageway etc.
The oil has jumped about 6 or seven standards (maybe more recently) since I started driving. Didn`t seem that long ago that SG was top petrol oil and CD for diesel. I think it was the standards before that when you had cars that clapped out at average 60k. Lots of shorter journeys too.......not as many motorways and not as much leisure time meant a car could be rotted by 60 k anyways
