I’m starting this topic to reply to posts of Aussiefrogs member Quai de Javel, after trying to post and PM there since Sunday.
Just about every time I send a post there, it says ‘forbidden’, even though I haven’t knowingly sinned of recently.
Here are the posts and PM’s:
It looks like your car is a Mk II, the switch isn’t causing your fault.
The switch can be parted from the ignition barrel, but it’s a fiddly job, and the switch comes new as part of the lock assembly with a different key, and is very expensive, something like $200 plus.
The fact that your fan spins as soon as you turn the key to the accessory position, is an indication that your switch works normally.
Yes, I also have a Xantia, and it hasn’t happened to mine, but it did happen to an acquaintance back when I lived in Collaroy.
Replacing the transistors fixed it, though only one was shorted.
MJ11015 is the type number of the transistors on the blower motor electronics.
The transistors are on the power board of the fan motor.
The motor is inside the felt cover above the passenger’s floor.
Replacing the transistors is a soldering job.
Unless you’re used to that, it’s much easier to get the board replaced from a wreck.
A new transistor board is also expensive.

Transistors much prefer to go short-circuit, because it doesn’t give you any hope that it will come good.
The map shows how shorted transistors, or just one shorted, will apply the full permanent voltage to the motor.
It’s like when the relay closes to go to full speed … where the transistors are bypassed to apply the full voltage for a solid breeze.

HDI, Believe it or not but this Hi-tech device is also in your '99 Xantia HDI 110 Exclusive, under trim (passenger side)
Edit: Just note it somewhere that if one day the blower fan runs ONLY in full speed mode or stop running than you will probably have a closer look at it (experience )
