1998 Xantia estate pwr steering groanning any ideas please?

Post by falling-out-with-my-car »

Hi, My xantia diesels pwr steering is groanning, it started when the hydraflush went in now the the system has been flushed and LHM replaced the groanning has continued, the noise if I had to pinpoint it although sounding a little strange appears to come from the point where the tyres touch the road. (maybe its the make up of the new front tyres)?

the bottom ball joints are fine no play there, the noise is worse after the car has been standing for a day and dissapears after an hour of driving it is more noticeable when using full lock as I do this everytime I reverse into my driveway.

There are no LHM leaks from anywhere that i can see with a torch from underneath or above the front of the car.

Has anyone any ideas please?

thank you in advance.

regards Nigel.

Could be a numbers of things but the active component is the power steering ram. The easiest way to determine the source of the noise is to find a friendly tyre exhaust centre with a ramp with swivel plates for the front wheels. Then the steering can be operated with the car elevated and hopefully reveal the problem.

Hi Nigel.

A good guess would be a dry bush inside the steering rack, this is located on the N/S end of the rack and is a teflon coated bush, if you can loosen the N/S gaiter and get some PTFE spray inside it will most likely go away, if you cant get into it easy, pop in when you are about Sawtry way (with some biccies) and I will put it up in the air and do it for you.

Regards
Martin.

Martin,

funny you should mention the N/s rack gaiter which split in June, I tried to repair it but it has split again, maybe it has dried out.

I'll give you a ring first thanks Martin.

regards Nigel.
