engine mangement light comes on when turbo at full boost 1.9

Post by lurchy666 »

hello, i got a xantia 1.9td which every time your working the turbo hard ie, when i was pulling a caravan up a 17% hill in 1st gear or at over 80 mph (on a track of course) the engine manegment light comes on

now if you let off or dip clutch and let revs go to idle the light goes stright out, i was wondering

a: could it be the wastgate not opening,
b: could it be the sensor donald ducked
c: where is the sensor what tell's it it has got to much pressure
d: what would you suggust to fix it,

normal driving ie, not towing and around town and moterways is fine its just i want it sorting before i blow turbo or something else when towing,

car is a xantia 1.9td hatch on a p plate,

turbo is defo working cause it goes like a bloody rocket and you can hear it spooling up when you've got the window open,

I think that is a turbo overheat pre-warning strategy. Means that the inlet air temp is excessive from the intercooler.

I don't think the TD's so sophisticated as to have air intake and turbo pressure sensors. There is a needle lift (injector) sensor that measures the timing. The connector lives above the glowplugs/injectors at the cambelt end and is open to knocks/abuse etc when working around that area so check it's got a good contact.

As you say Dave,

Almost 99.9% certain it's fuel starvation. On a Lexia you'd see a timing motion fault come up due to a lack of pump pressure to operate the timing device properly.

Check both the fuel filter and the tank strainer. The latter can get very badly furred up especially after a session on veg.

Definitely check the strainer in the fuel tank. It clogs up badly when a car is run on biodiesel but even on cars running diesel, gets its fair share of gunk on it. Its a 10 minute job max to check it and another 20 to clean and refit. Makes the world of difference to performance too!

i got told that the turbo has a sensor somewhere thats why i asked,

i will change fuel filter and check strainer just in case,

as far as i know it hasn't been run on veg

also why i asked about the wastegate is that you hear it spooling up but it never seems to spool down if you know what i mean, the turbo just seems to wind down with the revs, (on my old escort td and my mates passat tdi you could hear the wastegate working)

when the light comes on at 80 ish mph ( 70 if your in 4th at the time) it seems like the turbo kicks out, then if you back off then throttle it again she goes again altho after 100 mph light is on untill u dip the clutch and let her idle, and it wont pull past 100 mph,

it's only when the turbo is working hard and it's not temp related as stone cold it'll do the light if towing hard,

maybe i'm just driving it to hard, i dont like to drive quick (but had a few excuses to drive quick laterly as my missus is pregnant and she keeps getting sharp pains) but i'd like it solved for towing,

also the vaccum thing on fast idle dont work on mine for some reason could that have something to do with it,

Happens on Cassy if I'm driving on SVO, haven't changed the fuel filter and it's icy, while putting my foot down.
She's fine up to just over 3000rpm in those conditions, but if I take her up to 4000, she complains and tells me the fuel's too thick and not coming through enough :)
It causes the needle lift sensor to misbehave (as it's not getting fuel through it) and the K light comes on.

If the turbo is working hard, then it tends to go hand in hand with the injectors working hard :)

It sounds like you could do with doing the filter mod on hear
http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/for ... ?tid=10455

Then it should pull past 3000 no problem.

It's only a problem when running 100% veg when it's cold enough for there to be ice on the roads :)
Mark, if you're going to just filter your WVO rather than process it (which saves time and is safer and probably better for the engine than biodiesel, though not as good as SVO ;) ) look into getting an inline secondary direct fuel heater (you probably know about them anyway) which is basically a metal block with a couple of glow plugs in.
Davetherave and jgra are the lads to talk to about WVO :)
If you're cutting it with diesel (don't ever dilute veg with anything other than diesel, so ignore anyone that says to use unleaded, white spirits, varnish remover, snake oil, we've seen the damage it causes), then a secondary heater isn't really needed, it's only if you want to use higher % of veg and your pump complains.
