ZX turbo diesel clutch

Post by ken newbold »

Having recently bought a ZX turbo diesel estate knowing it needed a new clutch, today I've got the clutch and tomorrow I intend to do the job.
Having had very little to do with ZX's before, are there any potential pitfalls to look out for?

I've done a clutch on a Xantia with a pull type bearing, which this one has so should be ok with that, just wondered if there is anything else to watch out for.

Many thanks Ken

I reckon it'll not be a lot different from the Xantia Ken, bar for not having to move the pressure regulator out of the way and no hydraulic pipes to get in the way of things :D

I did one in a (long) afternoon with a little help from SWMBO and hindrance from rain. No real pitfalls. I seem to remember the inboard bearing on the right hand drive shaft was a bit awkward.

Would have gone better if I'd connected the wires on the starter motor the right way round. ;)

deep 11mm socket for the nuts on he driveshaft intermediate bearing 'hockey' bolts, or an 11mm ratchet spanner maybe..

they dont need to come out all the way, just enough to twist them 90degrees

It's pretty straightforward as these things go. Getting the bottom ball joints out of the hubs can be trying - the secret is to push the hub inwards (quite hard, like with your knee!) whilst levering the wishbone down. Alternatively, take the brute force option - put a long bar over the wishbone and wedge it against a block of wood under the car floor, then swing on it to lever the arm out. You need to remove the air cleaner, which will probably require the attention of the angle grinder. Have a good look at the inner wing whilst you are there - they rot here for a past time! Split the speedo cable above he box, then remove the OS shaft output housing, complete with the piece of cable - only 3 13mm bolts, but makes it easier to get the final drive out past the subframe. If you decide to change the clutch cable - get someone to help you, getting it back in through the bulk head is a nightmare! You'll be changing the release shaft nylon bushes, and input shaft bearing of course....

Rust, balljoints, air filter, wishbone bushes and more rust, made for a really unpleasant afternoon

The gearbox actually went back in much easier than it came out :? Job's not quite done yet though as I need to get some new wishbone bushes tomorrow and have a play with the rear brakes
