I'm a bit of a prophet of doom, hence my concern.

Year 2000 90Hdi forte, 40000miles.

We are going on a 2000mile+ return trip from Friday to next Thursday. After absolutely no probs since we got the car in July09, my wife reported this evening that when she turned on the ignition today the glow plug light flashed for 10 seconds or so. It was still flashing when she started the car, perfectly ok, light went off. Did not repeat this on next start-up.

It's never done this before.

isnt this something to do with a heater timing control fault? i had to sort this out on a F**d (forgive me) the light strutted its stuff on startup as usual but then would flash all the time the engine was running, a long time ago now i will try and remember what it was.

That was my first thought HDI. I've read some vehicles now use the EML to indicate emissions related issues - whether a fault found or regeneration occuring - in which case I would expect it to be covered in the manual.
