I'm certain the fans work because if the AC is turned on they run fine so that must rule out supply and relays. The sensor for the gauge is only used for the gauge , unplugging it has no effect on anything else.

Something called the 'bitron' sensor has been mentioned to me , any idea what that is ?

I'll test the solenoid valve tomorrow. The reason I asked about the electrical connections is that I suspect this car has had an engine change at sometime.

Are you sure there's a problem with the rad fans?? It takes a long time to get them to come on in an HDi, especially at this time of year - only time I can think the temp has crept up enough on mine to get them on was sat in a traffic jam for about 2hours with 30+ on the temp gauge (SWMBO was having a funny about not having the A/C on for some reason :? - then I eventually had enough and put it on, and was shortly afterwards greeted with the roar of full speed fans, which shook the whole car  I least I know they work I guess!).

We changed the coolant in my mates 306 HDi in spring a couple of years ago, and left it outside ticking over for well over 1/2 hour, and it was just struggling above 70° - no way it was going to get the fans on, so we took it out and ragged it instead!

My assumption was that when the temp gauge was showing over 90 Deg they should have kicked in at low speed at least ? It does take some time for it to reach this temp admittedly.

No, I think the HDi they don't come on till near 100°C - give it a good thrash  to get it nice and hot, then let it sit idling. If you get to >100 and they havn't come on, then there's probably is a problem. Mine hardly ever lifts the needle above 90, even when being 'worked hard' :P

Good grief !! Just had a look in the Paynes manual and although it doesn't specify the fan cut in temp it does say the thermostat isn't fully open until 99 Deg C !!!
Well , if this is true I'm unlikely to ever get the fans working , even on the hottest day's in summer the temp never goes over the early 90's regardless of conditions !
I'll just have to get the AC regassed and use that for piece of mind !

Just removed that solenoid valve and tested it as far as I can. With no volts on the coil air passes through the valve , with 12 volts applied the solenoid clicks but air still passes through , so I would conclude that it is faulty.

Anyone know the cheapest supplier for these please ? Or is it dealer only ?

I believe that the EGR and turbo solenoids are the same, and you can just swap them over, and leave the EGR disconnected. Pretty sure DickieG did this with his.
