Flaring tool help...
Im half way(ish) through replacing my leaking pipe, however i have a problem in that ive never done flares before, and the flares i can produce with the tool dont look the same as the one on the pipe i have removed!
The flare on the pipe i removed looks like this

But the ones i can make look like this

What do i do as the flares i make surely cannot fit the car!

Right i have a theory that the pipe has been previously partially replaced with 4.75mm brake pipe, as when i spoke to martin from pleides, he said that it should be 6.35mm pipe all the way, and also the pipe looks very slightly larger but definatly not 6.35!
Edit, no thats rubbish i think they are the same!
S0 hopefully a normal flare should work!, but there again the flare in to the hydraulic pump that martin made for me looked the same as the odd one i removed, just bigger.

Not a clue Andrew sounds about right, i am just replacing a pipe that broke!, the one im taking off is very corroded though!
It goes from the pump past the regulater then (it used to go to a rubber pipe then to metal) near the nsf wheel, then round the back of the gearbox to somewhere!

Yes, thats the one that goes all the way from the pump to the steering
ram. Its one single piece of pipe bridged from the engine to the chassis
with a rubber tube. Ive got the same problem with mine. The pipe is
corroded at the wheel arch by the front wheel. You would think that Cit.
would have made a joint somewhere wouldnt you. If youre sitting down
I"ll tell you that its a breathtaking £94 from Citroen!! I"ve been waiting
over 3 weeks for mine having been unable to find a s/h one.Still no sign
of it.

I have ALSO noticed that there are a Fair FEW NORMAL Flare type pipes on these Xantias..
Normally: On the steering Rack, to make it a standard part (I think) for Pugs too,
ALSO The ABS Hydraluic blocks have NORMAL and Citroen Flares as a mixture on different pipes...

It seems that they used the standard flares on all pipes above 3.5/4.5mm.
That pipe Dave, will need the standard flares on both ends of it as far as I recall.
You'll need to wind a big coil in it to replace the rubber part otherwise it'll fracture with engine vibration.
I'm not sure the Citroen LHM power steering ram is the same as the Pug one Paul, last time I replaced a ram on a Pug I did not notice a leakage return pipe on it.
Speaking of leakage returns, I see I have a small weep of LHM on my V6 pinion valve leakage return where it goes from a metal pipe to a rubber one. The rubber looks perished on the joint. It's highly inaccessible and ends up in the triple moulding in the main leakage return pipe near the LHM reservoir. I'll bet that one costs a fair bit too

Thanks for all the help, i got some 4.75mm pipe from kwik fit, and had a standard flare put on however the connector i asked pleides to make will need a citroen flare so i need to grind the pipe down to 4.5mm, what a nightmare! I need not have bought any citroen flaring tools or pipe at all!
