sounds like the stepper motor is on its last legs,

to prove the point remove it blast it out with carb cleaner and bung it back on, if this seems to corect the fault you almost certainly will need to purchase a new one in the very near future, as they dont seem to like carb cleaner up m,

Malcolm, will a failing stepper motor trigger the "Check Engine" light on a Xantia?

I had terrible problems with tick over on my 1.8 when I first purchased it, it would rise and drop like someone was pulsing the accelerator then conk out.
Turned out to be a air leak in the breather hoses. Id take a few hours take out the throttle body clean and made sure all the hoses are good, this will also give you an opportunity to clean the stepper motor and check the electrical connections.
Gone to the dark side.
