2006 C5 VTX+ Changing light bulb

Post by c5fan »

Hi there

I have a 2006 facelift model C5 VTX+, the reference number on the top of the headlamp is X3 H7 H1 DTG - does this mean it is a xenon bulb?

As far as I can see when the car is on main beam the main light on the nearside doesnt work and also it does not appear as though the nearside front side light works either.

Am I right in assuming the sidelight is just a normal non xenon bulb?

I'd greatly appreciate advise on which bulbs to buy? I've heard the xenons are £102+VAT from Citroen! I've had a look on eBay but can only find 01-04 Xenon replacement bulbs for £30 or upgrade bulb kits for halogen cars.

I've also heard nightmare stories about needing to remove the bumper to change a bulb. Is this necessary or will removing the battery be sufficient to change n/s front bulbs.

Greatly appreciate any advice, I've had the car a yr but up til now have had no issues. The only other small issue is that the steering wheel boss seems slightly loose but it doesn't really effect the drive - is this a common issue? Again any advice greatly appreciated

Firstly, Have you checked the fuses? The lights are sided ie. Near-side, off-side.

Many thanks for the reply, I did think it was a bit of a coincidence two bulbs going on one side. I've consulted the handbook but I can't seem to find any mention of fuses for the headlamps, am I missing something? I'll try and search the net.

Thanks again

If memory serves me right, the fuses are in the glovebox, behind a small panel which you pull off, :) but I stand to be corrected, :? when I had problems it was the sidelights blowing, and they're awkward to get at.

How do you get to the o/s/f sidelight bulb on a facelift C5?

Ive taken the cap off the back of the light, i can feel the bulb but cant get my fingers in to turn the bulb. Ive tried some bent long nose pliers but they wont fit either. Is there a trick to this or does the bumper have to be removed so i can get the headlight out? The LDS tank is at the back of the light so access is really difficult.

Any help much appreciated :)

You can get to it, but only your finger tips, before you try removing the bulb, try pushing the wires towards the front of the car, I found that they sometimes worked loose and that the bulb hadn't gone.

If you do have to replace the bulb, it pulls straight back, and I found the best thing to use was a pair of those 'locking clamps' that doctors use, name escapes me at the moment :?

Thanks, so the bulb just pulls straight out? No need to turn the holder?

I can feel it with my finger tips, though its difficult geting it to turn through the tiny hold in the back of the light.

Steve, is that your current Citroen list? Thats very impressive 8)

Side light bulbs changed when the Mk2 was introduced. They use a staggered pin rather than the push-in 501. You'll need 12v 6w 433C. I tried for a long time to change the side light bulbs without success. In the end I removed the bumper.

Thanks for the tips, ill try giving it a pull straight out, as i had been trying to turn it, as per the haynes manual - though i think thats S1 cars. Ill give that a go later today and see how it goes, looks awful with a light out.

At least you have the best of the lot there Steve 8)

In order to change the side light bulb (halogen) on my face lift C5 I had to drill a 30mm diameter hole over the bulb through the plastic shroud below the bonet. I could touch the wires just about and the bulb holder but could not pull or turn it so took to drastic measures. It worked fine, stuck a small patch over the hole afterwards to keep it sealed. The bulb pulls out without turning, you have to ignore Haynes on this one.

That's a brilliant idea. Maplins do a 30mm closed grommet that would be good for closing the hole - till next time!!

Well ive got it out :D

Took me a bit of fiddling but it isnt in too tightly, once i knew from here it doesnt need turning its not bad to remove. Though ill have to get a bulb tomorrow and refit it. This might prove a little more fiddly.

I just used some small/short pliers.

When I refitted the new bulb, I found it quite useful to have the side light on, an look through the front of the lense, you can just make out where the bulb goes that way.
