2 litre hdi 2001 xsara cutting out!! fuel related i think

Post by alexsharp2 »

hi my xsara 2 litre hdi has stalled on me once or twice i have pulled over turned key and has started again straight away no problem!

latley i came out the other day and it would not start!! i bleed it through and it started!!

then next day it start fine drove it half a mile stopped and would not start again!! had to bleed it through again and off it went!!

defo seems fuel related!! i know on a old range rover diesel i used to get draw back of the pump, could it be the same?

or could it be a weak pump? clogged up filter maybe? any ideas it has covered 145000 miles, i replaced her for my zx

Sounds like the VERY NORMAL Fuel lift pump inside the fuel tank..

They DO have a habit of packing up, and your simptoms point directly to this...

Releativly easy to get at, Im sure, lift up the rear seat base, and if theres carpet, pull it back, and you should then see a black circular cover, lift this away, you may need a screw driver, under there is the fuel pump..

Next time she stalls, or wont start, give the pump a tap, and see what happens.. but it certainly sounds like the pump..

If it has packed up (the lift pump) after replacing it remove the diesel filter in the engine compartment and take the filter out. Look for very fine metallic swarf. If there is any, either meticulously clean the filter housing and replace the filter cartridge or chuck the lot and fit a new housing and cartridge.

If any of that metal gets into the diesel pump it will ruin it and they cost a fortune. Just changing the cartridge will likely let some of it through.

For my C5 then Euro Car Parts list them at £88~£135.
You need to plug your car details in to find anything at all.

Yours looks to be in the region of £95

You're not wrong there.... I've just spent 15 minutes tyring to find a ball joint for our Xsara on it :x ...I gave up & went dug out the paperwork from one I fitted a few month back....bashed in the part number & it's listed under a ZX but not a Xsara....they both use the same part but why not list it n the Xsara pages

Hi,

this sounds very much the same as the problem I had.My HDI sx was starting then cutting out until it stopped completely. At first I thought it was the fuel lift pump but no such luck. There was swarf in the fuel filter that indicates the HP pump. These cost a fortune at citroen around £600 some factors can get them £400-450 but I found a diesel specialist that got one exchange about £300 I will have to look up the exact price,But this unit was as new direct from Bosch.Be careful if the pump goes the chances are it may have also done an injector. You will eed to do a bleed test.

Hope this helps my friend.

Cheers
Alan

I've heard of this problem a few times now...the lift pump goes dodgy & somehow swarf gets through to the HP pump....what I don't understand is how the fuel filter doesn't stop the swarf getting to the HP pump?

Hello...Erm, I am currently breaking (well will be from tomorrow) a Xsara HDI it is a 90 not 110...am I right in thinking they are interchangeable the lift pump that is?

I replaced the lift pump with one from GSF I think it was about November last year...I may even have the receipt somewhere. I have covered no more than 10k since then.

The symptoms you describe are very similar to what happened when mine died, and finally it broke down on the side of the road. Replaced the lift pump, has run sweet ever since....until the incident with a delivery van getting too friendly with the side of the poor old girl the other day.

You can have mine for £20 plus postage if you like..

Let me know if you are interested by way of a PM.

Best of luck.

Guys,
I don't think this is the lift pump.Swarf gets into the fuel filter because the HP pump breaks up the swarf is returned via the injector return back to the filter otherwise it would of been stopped at the fuel filter.

Cheers
