Mk1 or 2 what engines came with an autobox?

S2 TD 1.9 has the auto adaptive with the snow/sport modes too
- very rare model mind especially as an estate.

Ah I wondered about a TD with auto, I'm sure there was a non turbo diesel with auto, though this may have been mk1 only, and I can only imagine how slow it must have been.

Unlikely that a 1.9TD estate auto will appear for sale anytime soon then, I assume that was with an AL4 box.

So other options are the 2 litre petrol 8v with mechanical auto (4hp14?) for mk1's and 2 litre petrol 16v with electronic auto (AL4?) on mk2's.

That's right, I recall there was always a base diesel with a standard 3 speed
auto probably inherited from the Bx. Of course with my mind more on the
question, there was a 1.8i petrol too.

The 8v 2.0i auto is a great setup and I have a few of them as VSX saloons
- strangely enough, two 2.0i estates are s2 Exclusive 2.0i 16v's and BOTH
have seized engines rather than autobox problems and a TD Exclusive
saloon is knocking badly too - I may hasten to add, I bought all these like
this and am not allergic to engine oil or a walking disaster (well, the last
bit is open to debate... :x ).

The early boggo 3 speed will be the 4hp14 and the auto adaptive the AL4.
Of course the best thinking box is the V6's but the estate models only got
sold on the continent as much as I'd adore one of these (pref manual!!).

I know of a nice VSX 2.0i auto saloon on an N in dark green that may be
coming up for sale soon.

Not sure if the 1.9D Auto was ever offered as an estate though...

The S2 TD will have the AL4.

Sorry to be a right pedant here but the 4HP14 was a 4 speed 'box.

Try to go for the auto adaptive AL4.

Quite right Jim;

I forgot the D bit of proceedings! My father's 2.0i is SO smooth I don't
even notice the changes either! :P That had a new on the pallet 1.8i box
fitted too (beggars can't be choosers) which although ratio'd differently
is probably a lot better for it - a real little turbine of a motor!

Estate autos are very thin on the ground. Next you'll be hankering after
it being TD and in Exclusive spec. Go the whole hog and hold out for a
sunroof and leather too - nice in Delage red? May be some while mind!

I had a 2.0 8v saloon auto VSX before the V6. I really liked that car but it was just a bit slow, could have done with an Activa top end and turbo put on it. I'm guessing the 16v with the AL4 would be a bit more sprightly.

Not sure how 1.9 TD would shape up to a 2.0 16v petrol in the performance stakes, I guess the petrol would have a few more horses.

The early 16v's were 150 bhp and the later one's 135 against what, 95 bhp
for the TD? Mix into proceedings the autobox element and differing ratios yet
I'd still expect the 16v to be a racy number.

I'm looking forward to getting a VSX TCT estate on it's feet again although in
your case this only has the manual so no use for that rapid shooting brake
you require!?

I know nowt about the HDi's, did any of these not get the AL4 box then?

No Auto HDi or 2.1TD Xantias in the UK as I know although there was a 2.1TD Auto XM and I believe there was a 2.1TD Auto Xantia in some other countroes; I say this as my new V6 rad came in a box that said it was for a 2.1TD Auto.

Sid the Squid has a 1.8i S2 Auto Xantia. He'll be able to comment on performance...

How about doing a conversion? manual to auto...

isn't that the equivalent of having one arm amputated and re fixed to bend backwards which will then stop working and fall off?

It would be quicker to throw a V6 lump into a donor estate. Not that I would take that on either with my limited garage facilities, i.e. none.

What a car that would be though. Chuck a v6 engine into a TCT estate
bodyshell and you may as well Activate it too while you're there! Scare
the hell out of those stupid Beemers and Audis that go around terrorising
and pillaging the coutryside...

The 1.9d ZX auto needed a calender to test the acceleration - goodness knows what it would be like in a Xantia.

I have the 2.0 16v with the AL4box and find the performance pretty good. Because there's no lag on changes, I have surprised several boy racers away from the lights.
