Xantia Air-Con Bypass

Post by hilldweller »

Hi All

My timing belt has become rather frayed thanks to a stuck air-con unit. I noticed in the Haynes manual that the non-air con model looks identical except for the bolted on unit.

Anyone know if it's possible to bypass the unit with a belt from a non-air con model? I don't use the aircon and don't fancy having to buy the unit to keep the car running.

My Xantia is a 1.9td (1998 model).

As always thanks for any advice. :)

The quickest way, unless someone pops up with a link to the thread that's covered this before, and also the belt length you need, would be to use some string to map out the path the new belt will go (ensuring all pulleys turn the right way), and then measure the string.
That's what we did with Teh_Agent's when his compressor burst into flames.

Just a small point that may save some confusion: you mean the auxiliary drive belt (multi-vee) not the timing belt (toothed and hidden under the plastic cover immediately beside the auxiliary belt.

I would try to come up with a way to get the pully on the compressor moving again... are you sure you cant get the clutch to release ?

I'm not a mechanic, it's in the hands of someone I know who is. I want to make sure he's paid for his efforts but if there's some way I can cheapen the process then that'd be better - especially as I don't use the aircon!

I made a post of my belt routing which was fitted to by-pass the air-con. If you can find it, I think it has the belt measurement too.

It's not the solution I would have taken as that was done 7 years ago and I suspect the whole A/C is rotten to the core now. I get a duststorm of what I suspect to be aluminium corroded particles when the blowers come up

Not an ideal angle/view but it should give some pointers....

Route the belt as per Mikes pic, i used an 1150mm 6pk for a citroen zx derv with pas & it fits a treat.

Have been running this setup for a couple of thousand miles with no probs 8)

That's great info, guys, thanks a million!

I'll print the pic off at work and pass on the belt info to my mechanic!

I found the link: http://frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/viewt ... highlight=

Using a 1153 belt, so that confirms the zx belt measurement, too. :)

MikeT - so do you get dust just by turning on the fans??

I don't have the car on the road so it's not used regularly but each time the blowers kick in (even on the slowest setting) there is a brief "snowstorm". Maybe that will reduce/disappear when regularly used.

I'm not certain it's the result of the A/C bypass (done in 2002) but I can't think what else it might be.

I have quoted the number on the compressor , if you get under the car and wipe all the Sh1 T off you should find the relavent numbers. It is very heavy so really needs to be collected
