It's surprising just how clean a PSA diesel can be if given a top end rebuild.
When I replaced the head on my 2.5, I cleaned all traces of gunk from the induction system, polished the intake and exhaust ports, thoroughly cleaned the EGR valve, rebuilt the turbo and had the injectors calibrated. The car passed with a fraction of the allowed emissions on the first (fast pass) try.
I blame mainly the PCV and EGR for causing such a build up that they smoke far more than they should.
Regular servicing and decent oil seem to help too.
