A common problem with these engines is spills from the oil filler get under the coil pack and fill up the plug recess of the nearest plug, causing (if the oil is not perfectly clean) an intermittant miss.

Lift the engine cover and coli pack to check this. I had a worse case when I foolishly washed part of the engine bay (carefully avoiding the engine), but managed to fill 4 plug cavities with water. Surprisingly the spark is strong enough that the engine still ran, but was definitely rough and down on power.

Yes, I was shocked to find on mine the plug well nearest the filler was a good half-full of oil and the plug next door not far off either.

You'll find most likely the coil pack to be very oily too.

If the plugs have not been out in a fair time, take it easy. Crack them off a little and then spray Plus-Gas down around the threads and let it soak in.

Then, with an air-line, disperse any remaining Plus-Gas and carefully work them out, turning backwards and forwards until they come out easily.

Get yourself a new manifold gasket before you start as it'll be a dead cert you'll need it when you remove the manifold.

I had NO PROBLEMS what so ever after a 12 month standing, getting the manifold off, and all 6 plugs out - they came out a breeze, and so as a stop gap closed the spark gaps up a bit and cleaned the oil up and put them back, she improoved, so I think a set of plugs is needed, and of course the said rocker gaskets....

thanks guys!

You were lucky Paul :D

Mine fought me every inch of the way  Strangely, to cap it all, when they did come out, they looked practically brand new...

The generic plugs offered by GSF, the EYQUEM BBZ14, for the Xantia are fine. All petrol engines use the same plug even though GSF state they're for the Turbo CT. I checked their compatibility carefully before using them. They're less than £3 each which is a consideration when you have 6 of them to replace

Right, my latest!

I DO now have a spare working CD Changer BLAUPUNKT unit.... I discovered tonight that unless the plug has a good shove in, it wont work, so I tried tonight and it DOES work..

Ive lost my photobucket sign in password, so I cant upload the Pictures of the plug I found under the drivers seat that was causing a duff CD Changer! It was a mess....

Anyhow, my other Q is, do ALL S1 cars have the CD changer harness as far as the Plug under the floor goes??? I wonder if its possible to make a lead up useing a Clarion lead, and cut one end off, even better cut it half way and make two leads

Ill go and check the S1 VSX up top and see if that has a plug under the drivers seat spare... and my S1 SX td when I get to her again..

All VSX spec cars should have the plug under the seat (or under the console on estates). I don't know about lesser spec cars.

I would advise you to keep your spare changer, as I have had 2 fail, and a third already had the same fault when bought on ebay. If you don't have room for it in your life, I am looking for one...

Just for reference, my Xant doesn't have a CD loom, only 3 or 4 wires coming out the 10 pin socket on the back of the head unit.

Just for reference, you'll find if its an original equpiment, it will go under the centre console to the connecting plug from the CD Changer...

Theres a Round 14 pin DIN at the changer end, but none at the head unit side, this is because its connected under the floor...

Its the SAME plug as used on the S2 Clarion units, but NOT compatible at all, I tried it...

The TOP ISO plug on the radio takes the steering controls AND cd changer input/output communications....

Fair amount of corrosion there Paul!
What's the other plugs/harnesses like in that area?

EDIT: Paul, when uploading to photobucket you can select an option to reduce the resolution to 640x480

Maybe one of the back seat passengers of a previous owner didn't like the CD the driver was playing so decided upon a sure fire way to stop him/her from playing their awful CD collection
