Mystery belt .

Post by Chevron Terry »

While changing my Antifreeze yesterday , I noticed a belt with slight wear .
As you look down into the engine bay , its low and left .
One thing it appears to drive is the water pump .
is this a job I can tackle ? are there any pitfalls ?
I had the Cam belt changed 6 months ago , and it cost me a staggering £180 .
If I can , I would like to try and do it myself . [Iam a bit green though ]
regards Terry .

Hi Terry,

Any chance of a photo? Due to the different specs and the changes over the years it's hard to guess from your description.

£180 doesn't sound bad to me for a cam belt fitting. I had a Rover 115D done at a dealers in '95 and that cost £155. I suppose it depends on what was changed and who did it. Main dealer labour rates must be around the £70/hour aren't they?

Such prices and the couldn't care attitude are why I've done all my own work for the last 4 years.

Steve.

What car are we talking. The cam belt usually drives the water pump.

On a non aircon car, I'd say that was the auxillary belt. Ittake it you are meaning your ZX Terry?

Does it have power steering? If so, you may be confusing the power steering pump with the water pump.

On all engines fitted to the ZX, as John says, the waterpump is driven by the cambelt and this belt is securely hidden behind covers.

The auxillary belt is usually not a huge problem to change on a non-aircon vehicle. What makes you suspect it is worn?

Hi ,
Yes it is the Auxcillary belt .
the belt has got lots of small cracks in it .
Iam worried , if the belt breaks , how much damage will I do ?
Local Citroen dealer has quoted me ; £ 83-32 .
many thanks
Terry .
p.s. the price is to supply and fit .

I can speak with some authority on this as on Friday evening the auxiliary belt tensioner on my ZX TD seized, melting, setting fire to and snapping the belt.
The main problem was the enormous cloud of smoke that engulfed the car behind :o
A new belt was £14 from MDC and I've got a tensioner coming from Auto Parts Online for £28 delivered. As for fitting, it real is an easy job as the tensioner is accessible from underneath and all you need is an allen key. 10-15 mins tops!

As for damage? There is none, the steering gets a bit heavy and the alternator stops charging. I drove home with no issues.
I knew the tensioner was on it's last legs, had been for ages, but it was one of those jobs I just kept putting off. Now I'm having to use the Renault... That'll teach me.

glad yours is sorted Andy..

The amount of cars (one of mine included) that have snapped/dislodged the cambelt, as a result of the Aux belt snapping and getting caught up, is astonishing... caused by age of belt or as Featch says, tensioner/roller failure..

well done for spotting yours Terrry :D
