January 1998 - can't remember what that equates to in reg letters...

Yup, Jan 1998 was the change over - that in the UK equates to R reg, so BOTH series 1 and 2 can come on R plates...

Id use spheres off a P reg on a V reg... AS LONG as BOTH cars are SX trim or lower and DO NOT have hydractive...

The P reg car will have the switch ahead of the height lever, the V reg will have it mounted on the dash ignition key side of the dash..

Basically if they're the same car but the only difference is the bumpers and dash and reg year, you can swap spheres (I'd wonder why you want to though).

So estate <-> hatchback is a no-no
LX/SX <-> VSX/Exclusive/Activa is a no-no

If we're talking about the suspension spheres, and not the accumulator or anti-sink spheres.

I read somewhere that the X2 has significant improvements with regards to safety.. and to some extend build quality..... but I might be mistaken.

Build quality on the S2 is much poorer- approaching Ford/Vauxhall levels in places.

Are you sure? I've had S1 and now S2, and i prefer the improvements they made, like the better dash, rain sensitive wipers and extra cubby holes in the doors, i have never noticed that the build quality was poorer?

The seats are the main problem. The frame pushes through the padding like Ford seats do and the covers wear through Vauxhall-style.

On reflection most of my S2 gripes weren't about build quality. The bright but useless headlights (standard fitment on all modern cars it seems), the courtesy light delay when you OPEN the door, the alarm that couldn't be disabled, the Trafficmaster system and the bloated styling at the front, along with the dreadful seats, added up to a car I couldn't live with.

It didn't seem as well screwed together as the old one but maybe I had a bad example.

Speaking very personally I much prefer the MK1 in every way, hence all my fleet are MK1s :D The only thing I miss from the MK2 is the rain sensitive wipers and an oddment tray not stuffed full of keypad :twisted:

I've not noticed any build quality issues between the marks at all, not hatchnacks anyway. Estates of either mark are a different story though :twisted: I'm not convinced Heiulitz did such a good job on them, especially with regard to corrosion protection at the rear...

I disagree... My car has done 400000+ km, and I am actually surprised that the seats are in as good a condition that they are in!.. and I do not recognize your complain. Sure they are "ruffed" up a bit on the "shoulders" AND they are a bit smelly, but they are not worn through in any way.. and the frame and adjustments are also still "tight".( I admit that they MIGHT have been replaced at some point... but I doubt it)
THE HEATING EVEN WORKS!.. who would EVER have expected that??? :)

However.. compared to ...say.. vw they ARE quite "soft"..much like the "sports" seats in my old zx furio.
I agree.. If you don't like such soft seats it could ruin the experience of the car.

I too find the "facelift" unsuccessful. I think they did it to get it in line with the Xsara and perhaps prepare the world for the ugliness that was the mkI C5! (IMHO) :)
I much prefer the look of the X1... it has more "edge" without going all the way like the XM.
I like the dash as it is.. but would very much have liked it to be more "French" ... say.. digital gauges... different switches and so on... as it is.. its just like any other car.

Ps: One issue that might haunt the X2 and not the X1 could be the rust problem in the panel at the bottom of the rear doors ?.. I have noticed that ALL X2's I ever see has had corrosion at that spot.. haven't noticed it on the X1's to the same extend.. but To be honest I haven't looked that much on X1's :)

You're all insane. :shock:

The Mk2 is a far better looking car, and as for build quality? Much of a muchness in my experience...

X2 wiring is a blessed simplification. Cosmetics to me, are neither here nor there.

Age matters - you can't get a 2001 X1. Plus they tinkered with stuff and finetuned it through several incarnations, like Hydractive centre blocks.

If PSA had paid Toyota to design the HVAC instead of Valeo, the Xantia would have been a perfect car. :P

Pffft ;)

With it's fat lip bumper, horrible headlights that don't even have useful pots on top for nuts and bolts like the Mk1 does, absolutely awfully thin steering wheel that even with an additional leather cover to pad it out still feels like I'm holding onto a pencil, and don't get me started on the radio buttons that are so easy to knock, and horn buttons you can't miss - even when you're trying to, and I'd love to know what they were smoking when they decided to put the rear heater switch on the end of the wiper switch!

Ok so the glove box is a bit more useful and lockable, but the useful dashboard has been sacrificed for passenger safety - what if you don't particularly like your passenger? :D
The tray where the later Mk1s have their keypad is useful, but that can be swapped on the Mk1's, as being a Citroen Xantia should be enough of an anti-theft device.
