Is there a high mileage club for Citroens? Perhaps someone should start one online. All it needs is a bit pf PHP/MySQL. I did one for our Volvo club some years ago. Its is HERE

Correct me if I'm not quite right Featch but my recently sold 1.9TD was not far shy of 200K.. Not really tired at all at that mileage...

My V6 has just turned over 160K. My Activa and 2.1TD are mere youngester at 109 and 104K respectively.

Yes, it's not at all unusual for a Xantia to rack huge mileages. Got to say something about how well they're basically screwed together.

It seems the high mileages are not confined to diesels either. My V6 at 160K has an incredibly healthy engine and I know of an Activa that's not far shy of 200K and that runs like a clock still...

Well, we had an old 1987 BX 19 DTR that had clocked up 330'000 and we was just keeping it alive to see how many miles we could get out of it, infact the car was still respectable and we used to loan it out to customers when their car was in for work. The old banger used to start and drive faultless, unfortunatly one of our customers hit a post office van with it and wrote it off.

The engine lived on though as I fitted it into an old Suzuki SJ 410 off roader, the engine pulled like a train and the Suzuki was the best off roader that I have had.

Hi,

My 1993 Xantia TD has just come to its end when the head gasket failed for the second time at 375000. Not worth replacing as original suspension hydraulics (except spheres of course) are just about shot and rear arm bearings need doing for the second time. It has had (excluding the originals) one clutch, two rear exhausts, one hydraulic pump, one alternator, one starter motor, one radiator, two front wheel bearings, one water pump, 2 strut tops and the front lower arm rear bush replaced on one side plus cam belts and tensioners every 70K and oil and filter every 6K. Its drive shafts are the originals. The body is sound, no rust where it matters. One issue has been the number of wiring failures to the door equipment when the wires fail due to fatigue from door opening and closing. I shall be (am already) very sad as it goes to the scrap yard.

I don't think that is a bad record for reliability, the engine was still going strong (before the gasket went again) and was returning 44- 45 mpg.

My current C5 2.2 HDi has 140000 on the clock and previous (1984) BX 1.9D did 260,000 and (1983) 2.0 petrol CX family estate did 270,000 before I sold it, still going strong.

I have found that citroens mechanicals seem to last well, electrics are a bit weak. My experience of Fords (escorts and fiestas) is that Ford are too good are designing components for a life that seems to be about only 100k !!!!

Regards

John

I test drove an X-Taxi 2.1 tD XM a couple of years ago it had five hundred thousand on the clock I asked how he managed to keep it running for that long and he said change the engne oil every three thousand miles and oil filter every six thousand miles.

wish I bought it now there is a high mileage club, it was £450.

regards Nigel.

Hi my 1994 1.9TD ended its days 5K short of 300K, due to rear suspension failure ( i wish i had know of the forum then :( :( ) it was driven and laid up in a friends garden where it happily rested for 2years before being started up ( 1st turn of the key !!!! ) and driven to the big crusher ,here's a pic of it in its final days just after hauling 2.5 tonnes of timber over 200mls ........................(scroll down 8th pic on my post)

The HDI i sold not too long ago had 232k on the clock when i sold it on, the other TD's i've owned in the past have generally gone past 160k without much issue, a BX 19TGD my dad had was on about 175-180ish when we moved onto his first Xantia and there is an old Pug 405 Estate TD in Warrington and the few years ago when i was last in it was just over 500k and he stuck by his gentle driving style and regular oil changes, which was every month nearly for him or 2months at most and changed to a thinner stuff for winter he said...

My C5 HDi has 140K+ on the clock, no parts needed up to now apart from usual service items according to it's history.

The XM 2.5 was at about 150K when the head had to be replaced due to cracking - I think it had been this way for some miles before I bought it.

The Xantia HDi had about 140K on the clock when I sold it, no out of the ordinary parts needed. I got 40MPG towing a trailer with XM on it. I think the person I sold it to killed it.

The XM 2.1 had 120K+ on the clock when I sold it. EPIC pump, best ride quality yet and did 42MPG knocking about.

Current XM 2.0 TCT, in bits, head off, turbo in bit's, currently changing clutch. 16MPG on LPG, 78K.

And just to add a little something else, a works Astra van, hammered senseless, new clutch at 175K and was still going 'strong' when I left at 192K.

I've always thought that the Xantia was a better built car than the XM. I can only go on comparing Mk 2's though. The hydractive system is much better laid out too IMHO.

Steve.

How many gearboxes has it had Phil?*  For such a highly strung car that is seriously good. Must be very well cared for.

*I'm joking here as a lot of us run electronic autoboxes that are said to be sealed for life and they are all potential timebombs sooner or later. I guess yours has the good old 4HP14 which does not suffer the problems of its later bretheren...

All joking aside, I'd be interested to know more of the history of this car and what major work has been carried out on it.
