Xantia 1.9TD top engine mount

Post by firstrebel »

On Saturday Richard (DickieG) and I changed the U-shaped suspension buffer (p/n 96132370) that sits above the top engine mount, under the diesel hand primer pump. That suspension buffer sits on top of a conical shaped 'spacer' (p/n 1827.27), which in turn sits on top of the actual mount, I think.

When holding the thread of the spacer we found it very easy to wiggle it around. Should it feel so 'sloppy', suggesting the rubber mount itself is worn, or should it be firm?

You mean the rubber mount (the bit with the thread poking out of the top) wobbled around like a good 'un?

Pretty normal in my experience. It's a fluid filled mount and provided it is not split and spilled the fluid inside then it's pretty much OK. Do look for preishing cracks in it though..

The reason for the two buffers either side of it is to control movement simply because the mount is so soft.

If it's all moving excessively then that points fairly and squarely to a lower donut mount on its way out, especially if it has at some point be over-stressed or is contaminated with oil.

I'm of the belief that the top mount is in part responsible for the lovely smoothness of the 1.9TD. Without it being so soft the whole thing may well be much harsher than it is

Ah, it was the "Suspension" word that put me off, not using the "Top Engine Mount" words lost me..

Agreed, this is a rather sloppy mount ON ITS OWN, and should be limited by the two rubber end stops either side..

This mount, or should i say the buffers on the mount decided to split on my old TD. Because of this, it started premature failure of the lower mount too. New buffer section from Citroen sorted it, it also need a little bend due to the wear area on the engine mount bracket.

Sorry about the 'suspension' red herring. The two rubber buffers each side of the U bracket were well knackered; one side was hanging off. So I might get a new donut in case.

What size socket will get the conical metal 'spacer' off, or is there a better way than a socket.
