It's not something as simple as the panel lamps dimmer/rheostat near the bonnet lever playing up, or turned/stuck in the off position?

Not sure on a S2 Xantia but this problem i had on my S1
Do you have any back lights for your stereo/heater controls and buttons on the facia
If not i would suspect that either the fuse for the instrument cluster is blown or the dimmer switch/wheel under steering coloum has come adrift from its plug.On a S1 you can prise the switch out and have a feel for the wire/plug and pull through the hole to reconnect.
Assuming you had the cowling off to replace the light stalk not been unknown not to reconnect the dimmer..been there done that
