Buying Brand new Steel wheels

Post by falling-out-with-my-car »

Hi does anyone know where I can source some brand new steel 15" wheels for my Xantia 1.9TD please (other than Citroen main dealers)?

It might be worth noting that I have the larger brake calipers with vented disks.

any constructive info would be gratefully appreciated thanks as I have buckled 2 wheels over time on our very bad Northants backroads now they seem to balence ok but wobble badly at speed.

many thanks in advance Nigel.

Is there any particular reason why you need new ones? There must be 1000s of perfectly good used ones out there as it wasn't just the Xantia that used that wheel

Are you sure it is the wheels and not the tyres?

I have had 2 or 3 Michelin tyres that go out of round at speed.

The only place to buy OE wheels is the dealers.

Have you priced them up at Citroen?

If they are very dear then buy some second hand ones and refurb them  Refurbing costs are about £25 a wheel if you get someone else to do them.

unable to find any second hand ones across Northamptonshire I have visited 7 scrap yards and there are no 15" citroen wheels.
it the most common size wheel apparently but because of the recession there are not as many cars being scrapped which means a shortage in supply and the demand cannot be met.

reconditionning sounds great if you can source some used steel wheels.

As for the tyres they were fitted today brand new and my buckled wheels are still misbehaving badly between 40 and 55 MPH when the engine is under load, even worse when accelerating uphill.

regards Nigel.

I picked up a 14" steel rim (back when I had the ZX) from a Pug dealer for 20-something quid. I can't imagine a 15" being much more.

edit: I had a look on pr-net - couldn't find prices on Xantia steels, but 5401H7 is the part number for a Berlingo 15" 6J15 steel which comes in at €44...

So it'll be half that price in £££ most likely.

Service Citroen lists a few variants of steel wheels depending on MkI or MkII and RP Number. I think they are just slightly different designs

MkI range from £37-£58 inc (about 4 types)
MkII are both around £54 inc (2 types)

Look for the steel wheels off a citroen C5 as they will fit quite easily and save you some wieght as they are super light compared to the xantia rims! and in plenty supply as well. even check ebay for breakers near you :)

thanks everyone for your help but an answer has transpired over sourcing these steel wheels for the Xantia.

Citroen seemed to be confused over which wheels fitted which car there are two variations as I said in the original question " I have the larger of the two types of brake calipers", which dictates the internal diameter of the wheel, my mate has a petrol 1.8 estate with small or narrow brake calipers and standard front brake disks but his wheels won't fit my xantia estate, my dad has an Xantia VSX and his alloys wont fit my estate because his car has narrow brake calipers on vented disks.
the smaller internal diameter wheels are considerably more expensive which sounds typical for citroen, the size to fit my car have a larger internal diameter because I have vented disks and wide brake calipers.
(measured from the centre of the hub to the outside of the disk).

Are you still with me???

the fact that it is a turbo diesel makes no difference they appeared to fit both types to different cars. anyway the price for the larger steel wheels 15" outside diameter is £47.00 + VAT at citroens they don't stock any in the country but reckon they can get them in 3 days from France which puzzles me somewhat because it takes them 3 weeks to get a hydraulic return pipe from France. There you go. so in the grand scheme of things a pair of new steel rims are not all that expensive unless of course you have the small calipers and I was quoted £147 each for those.

regards Nigel.

15" STEELS were fitted from around 1996 onwards... to ALL Xantias!

ALL Estates had 15" wheels, because they ALL had the larger front brakes..
15" were fitted to smaller braked cars after 1996...

ALL ALLOYS right from the start were 15"

Ive a stack of 15" steels Id gladly like to get rid of!!

ALL S2 Xantia wheels are 15"

Im in North wales, but possibly making a trip to Scotland soon to collect my V6 Xant.. I COULD bring some with me and meet you somewere on M6 if it helps!

Hi Gents

my buckled wheels are still misbehaving badly between 40 and 55 MPH when the engine is under load, even worse when accelerating uphill.
Are you sure this is your wheels? if they were buckled then they would vibrate regardless of the drivetrain loading, have you checked your inner tri knuckle joints for wear? or the driveshaft extension bearing?.

I have purchased Xantia steels before and found the Dealer to be the cheapest... around the £20 mark I think, for some reason the spare steel on earlier Xantia's was a different size to the other four!

Has it? The TYRE size is different, but when an Early Xant had 14" wheels, thats 1993 to mid 1996 the spare was a 14" too... AND even if you had the VSX 15" alloys, they put in a 15" Steel with the spacers for the alloy bolts..

Then of course after 1996 when steels went to 15" all were in line..

ALL 5 or 6 early Xants with 14" steels Ive come across have had 14" spares on them too...

Yes the wheel was not as wide.
