Hi Colin

Thanks for the info but the suspension on the Volcane is a bit hard for my friend who is elderly, like me. :? My son had one once.

Strangely enough I have only just come of the phone to the owner of a very nice sounding..? silver td in Callington, says its very nice and with service history. 120k but if its been properly antifreezed the head gasket should be alright for about another 30k.

We will probably go and have a look at it on Monday

Peter

an XUD headgasket checking tip for you:

ENSURE the car is stone cold, start the car and put the heater on MAX HOT!!

Then make a note of HOW SOON the warm to hot starts comming through.. the SOONER the warmth comes through the BETTER and freer the water ways are.. If its had good anti freeze then there is ABSOLUTLY NO reason why she wont get to 200k!!!!!

Stronger the anti freeze the better the chance! TRUST ME Ive prooved this!! and know this!!

I can explain how the heater test works if you like, but beleve me its all related!! Ive an XUD TD in a Xantia L reg, that lets warm air through EVEN Before the guage starts to move and Ive just gone down the road!! Been like it since 170k.. She has now just passed 210k and still performs the same and NO pressure in the cooling system AT ALL!!!

You have already convinced me about the antifreeze Paul, good tip about the heater though, thanks. I can appreciate how clear waterways would speed up the heater.

Peter,

Its the desgin of the water flow in the engine the makes it worthy!

The water flows from the waterpump, through the block, then THROUGH the head gasket to cool the head and out the gearbox end of the head TO the heater matrix... then out the other side of the matrix to the junction on the back of the block, from there is the flow to or from the bottom outlet from the thermostat house round the back of the block, and also to the bottom hose to the radiator... but the direction through the head gasket to the heater is confirmed, as far as Im concerned....

This is a bit OT but came up while I was searching for the right power steering fluid for my daughter's Saab (still not resolved)

It is an interesting article on antifreeze in relation to Saabs but could equally apply to French born vehicles.
