Xantia front struts

Post by artj »

Does anyone know a source of reasonably priced Xantia frony struts(new)? GSF used to do them for around £100 but I was just told the only struts they sell are £245+ VAT each

what is wrong with your struts,

i just looked in GSF's 06 catalouge which lists

N43462/4 142 SQUID

1.9TD/2.0/2.0 16V,

or you could speak to Martin at PLIADES who is also a FCF member

Front struts on the Xantia are very reliable, I only get enquiries about once per year, so I guess that they last well.

Some people do say that it fails the MOT due to leakage. My theory is that the strut is fine, it's the little seals in the top mount that let the fluid run dowm the strut and make it look like the strut is weeping.

If the strut top seal was leaking, before the fluid could exit at this point, it would have to fill the strut housing with LHM, this would cause the strut return pipe to blow off before the fluid got to the top of the strut.

Well thats my theory? I may be wrong, but check it all before spending on a new strut, as it will only be a new Citroen part, as they are made in such a way that they cannot be overhauled.

Regards
Martin.

The problem is that the front drops to the bumpstops after about 2 hours, and there are some drips coming out of thelhf strut.Do the anti-sink valves ever fail?

If you were loosing enough fluid to cause it to sink, you would have a big puddle not a few drops, I don't think that the two problems are related. Are you sure that the leakage is not coming from the return pipe? They perish for a pastime.

There are no external leaks, just some drips from the return pipe when its pulled off its return line from the body.(definitely slightly more from LH strut)

I wouldn't worry about it then. If a strut really fails the fliud pressure is often high enough to blow the return pipe off, you obviously just have more leakage from one than the other. I have been running hydropnumatic Citroens for about 25 years and have only ever had one strut fail.

So do you think the anti-sink valve needs replacing.

I don't think that the anti sink has any effect on the front suspension, I believe its a reservoir for the rear brakes. It could be that your leaky strut could be causing the car to drop but if it takes two hours I wouldn't worry, one of my XMs goes down almost immediatly you switch the engine off but it drives perfectly OK

Perter XANTS do have an anti sink valve at the front and rear when fitted, and yes i belive it can cause the susp drop artj is getting,

but i do agree and certain its not strut main seal faliure, as you would get a torant/gush of fluid comming out of the trickle/leakage return pipe when pulled off
