hi what do you think of the 2.1 xantia's is it better or not than 1.9's? as think ive found one for me!!!

Depends what you want from your car.
I found the 2.1TD I had (that now resides lovingly with Jim) to be sluggish and not much fun to drive.
They can't run on veg making them more expensive, however they are less thirsty (allegedly, I only managed 32mpg out of mine, though Jim gets something like 50mpg)
Great for towing.
Think of it as a shire horse compared with the race horse that's the 1.9TD

How could a 2.1 12vavle be slower than a 1.9 8valve ?? Was one a slugomatic and one manual (chalk and cheese, slugomatics are bloody terrible).

In the XM's they seem to rate the 2.1 12valves as the pick of all the motors

Two words: Lucas EPIC.

The older XM 2.1s had a lovely mechanical bosch pump, so I'd expect them to go like the clappers and be able to run on veg.
The lucas EPIC is totally controlled by the ECU, it decides how slow you can accelerate.

that makes sense, mines a bosch pump.... With a slugomatic gearbox it's very slow off the line, but surprisingly swift once rolling (given it's driving through a sh!tful slugomatic gearbox) and hauling a big XM along

2.1 in the Xantia ! Hopless! I test drove one years ago against the 1.9 I had at the time!

It WAS slower then the 1.9!! I agree TOTALLY with Xac words! EPIC!

And also with Shane! The XM 2.1 is brill with a manual box and Bosch Mechanical, but rather slow to take up with an autobox..

But what do you buy a DERV for?? Racing or Economy!!!??

What!!!!

I love my 2.1TD to bits. There is NO comparason with a 1.9TD at all. About the only thing they have in common is they both run on DERV.

It is fairer to compare the 2.1TD with a 110HDi.

They are truely excellent. Fast, torquey and very economical.

Bar for not being able to burn veg, the Lucas EPIC is a very, very competent and good pump.

The 2.1 is amazing in the XM with Bosch mechanical system, but when I tested a 2.1 on an R reg I think it was, (S1) I was NOT at all impressed, and my 1.9 with 189k At that time was quicker then she was...

Dont get me wrong the 2.1 is a far more advanced unit and I admire it greatly, with 12v technology, I think it came at the wrong time and too late.. a great shame!!

Not at all Paul, I love the 2.1TD as it (as Xac will testify) suits me and my style of driving down to the ground. I'm the first to admit it's not everybody's cup of tea.

The 1.9TD and 2.1TD are very different in character and driving the two back-to-back as I have many times throws it into very sharp focus. The 1.9TD is a racy little number that loves revs and is very responsive, feeling almost ike a petrol engine. It lacks low-down grunt in my opinion.

The 2.1TD on the other hand feels very much like an old-school disesel in that it it not by any means a revver and in fact is not that keen to rev much above 3K at all. Where its strength really lies is in its massive low-down grunt. As Xac says, it's a shire horse of an engine whereas the 1.9TD is more a racehorse. In that respect, the 1.9TD is absolutely incredible for a diesel.

I find the 2.1TD far more economical and I agree it's not anywhere near as exciting as the 1.9TD but as a staid old soul who is far from an enthusiastic driver for the most part, it's perfect for me. I like big, lazy engines and it surely is that

As you say Paul, what do you buy a DERV for? I buy for economy. I have an Activa and V6 when I want to enjoy a bit of enthusiastic driving... My 2.1TD is a workhorse with a workhorse engine.

I've had a 1.9 a 2.1 and now a Hdi 110 (the 1.9 and the 2.1 at the same time).

All different, but I agree the 2.1 and thw 110 Hdi are more similar.

But back to 1.9 vs 2.1, it had to be the 2.1 all the way. It was quicker, especially in real driving with great pick up from low revs and no problem getting round to 5000rpm + when needed. Overall it was more economical both as a daily driver and as a tow car and etter as a motorway cruiser. When one had to go the 1.9 went and the 2.1 stayed, not a difficult decission.

2.1 vs Hdi 110, not quite so easy. And yes I had to make that decission as well and the Hdi stayed - but that was a head decission not a heart decission, as the Hdi is 4 mpg more economical.

The 2.1 is the only engine for me, preferably in manual form and in an XM

I believe that it is the best IDI engine ever made. As Jim says, if you want a diesel that goes like a petrol, go for a 1.9 but if you like driving everwhere in top gear and want really good fuel economy, there's no contest. It excellent for towing too with tremendous low down torque.

Peter, I know the 2.1 is the best, but the comment was that there tends to be different tunings when fitted to the Xantia - the one I tried was more like a 1400 D!!

The XM's I have sampled with the 2.1 manual setup HAVE been VERY good and impressive!

The 2.1 in the Xantia is more desirable, and is RARER, Ive also noticed they also get the V6 front bumper, which is a bit more agressive, and different to the 1.9 and all others in the range..
